Since 1899 was canceled by Netflix after just one season, there won’t be a sequel.
The only season of the show, which was developed by Dark showrunners Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, featured eight episodes and portrayed a group of European immigrants as they traveled from Southampton to New York City.
Bo Odar announced the news in a post on Instagram, writing: “With a heavy heart we have to inform you that 1899 will not be renewed. As we did with Dark, we would have wanted to wrap up this amazing trip with a second and third season. But occasionally things don’t go as you had hoped.
“This is life. We are aware that this would disappoint the vast majority of fans,” he added. But we want to express our sincere gratitude for your participation in this fantastic trip. I adore you. Never overlook.
Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, and Gabby Wong starred in the series, which was directed by Bo Odar and co-written by Friese and a number of other writers.
Wong, who portrayed a native of Hong Kong, recently revealed her initial reactions to the show’s concluding episode, which confused some fans. “I read the final episode at four in the morning while I was breastfeeding my son at the time who was a newborn, and I think I punched my husband,” she recalled.
“I had that response. I smacked my hubby in the face and woke him up. Oh, that’s the conclusion, she said. “Every single individual in that room is there for a reason, even though you might not have gotten any explanations or any elaboration of it in season one,”
Unless the show gets picked up by a new network, Wong and the show’s viewers will never know what became of the Kerberos travelers.
