Thank the rains that have fallen in Montana, because 1923 will return for a second season. Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren’s Yellowstone prequel recently made a triumphant midseason comeback with the promise that prodigal nephew Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) will soon return to care for his diminishing family.
After a horrible attack by enraged sheep herders that left John dead and pushed Emma to commit suicide, the Dutton family has already lost John Sr. (James Badge Dale) and his wife Emma (Marley Shelton). In addition to being engaged and his fiancée Liz (Michelle Randolph) being pregnant, their son Jack (Darren Mann) is also determined to exact revenge on his parents’ murderers. After being shot numerous times, the ranch patriarch Jacob (Ford) is hanging by a thread, and his wife Cara (Mirren) is doing her best to keep everything together while affluent developers encroach on the ranch. A fight for the ages is anticipated as Teonna (Aminah Nieves) escapes her cruel government boarding school and goes on the run. Only the fact that 1883 did not receive a second season is surprising, as Taylor Sheridan had always intended for 1923 to have two seasons. Yellowstone Prequel 1923 Premise
The spin-off, initially titled 1932 before the creators changed the year in which it is set, takes place during the Prohibition era after World War I, with Montana facing an economic collapse before the Great Depression. This places the scenario roughly 35 or 40 years after the events of 1883 and 30 or 35 years before the birth of Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton III.
“1923 focuses on the Dutton family’s next two generations as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness and Prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle theft; all battled under the cloud of Montana’s great depression, which preceded the country by almost ten years,” according to the official show description.

The Dutton family’s trek across the plains to Montana was chronicled in 1883, along with the story of how they ended up settling there as opposed to their intended destination of Oregon. The teenage daughter of James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret (Faith Hill), Elsa (Isabel May), was wounded by a Lakota arrow in the liver before James and Margaret could travel all the way to the Pacific Northwest. James brought her to a beautiful valley in Montana where she passed away; the valley later became the Dutton farm. James and Margaret passed away tragically at the start of 1923, and James’ brother Jacob and his wife Cara arrived to take care of the ranch and of their nephews John and Spencer. John has stayed on the property with plans to succeed Jacob while Spencer, a WWI veteran, has relocated to Africa to hunt large game.
