The savage shooting deaths of Margaret “Maggie” Branstette and her son Paul Murdaugh on June 7, 2021, rocked not only their town but the entire country. That’s because their husband and father, Richard Alexander “Alex” Murdaugh, was soon found accountable for the same, as thoroughly examined in Netflix’s “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal.” For the time being, though, if all you really want to know is a little bit more about his mother, Elizabeth “Libby” Jones Alexander Murdaugh, the person he attempted to use as an alibi, we have all the information you need.
Who is Libby Murdaugh?
Libby, who was reportedly born in Columbia, South Carolina, in the early 1940s, has undoubtedly always been a powerful woman, as seen by her stable social status even prior to her marriage. In actuality, she married soon-to-be circuit solicitor Randolph “Randy” Murdaugh III on June 3, 1961, having already graduated from Columbia College with a bachelor’s degree. She was actually recognised as one of the top ten students in her 1961 graduating class and included in the Who’s Who Among Students at American Universities & Colleges, according to archives.
At that point, Libby began his profession as a school teacher, working for two years in Lexington County while Randolph finished his education and eventually moved to Varnville to support his career. But rather than giving up her independence to support their family, she went on to work as a teacher in Hampton County schools and engaged in a few other community projects. This loving mother and wife was reportedly also a church leader, vice president of a local country club, a youth programme counsellor, and a member of the Children’s Foster Care Review Board.
However, it turned out that Libby’s 1976 obituary in The Hampton Guardian, which claimed the proud mother of four had passed away at the house she shared with her loved ones, was completely false. She was, in fact, still alive and well; the documentary revealed that her husband had set up the entire scenario as a kind of threat when he found out she was considering filing for divorce. However, it’s important to remember that this claim has never been confirmed, so it’s not merely an allegation as of yet—it’s also unclear who actually submitted the horrific obituary.
Where is Libby Murdaugh Now?
As far as we can tell, Libby is still alive and living in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, close to her family, but her condition isn’t perfect—the eighty-something-year-old suffers from dementia. Alex’s alibi for the evening of June 7, 2021, thus, fell apart accidentally because she has been under the watch of medical specialists since at least the autumn of 2019. He allegedly told police that he had spent about 30 to 40 minutes with his mother that fatal evening, but her carer quickly came forward to claim that he had only spent 20 minutes with her. His timeline was fractured by this, which led to suspicion and ultimately conviction.
