The Nintendo Switch will receive Bayonetta 3 in 2022. The legendary action-adventure franchise from PlatinumGames is about to make a dramatic comeback with the alluring witch bringing her skills to the devastated streets of Shibuya, Tokyo. As before, Bayonetta is decked up for battle and ready to take down any angel or demon who dares to stand in her way with her hand and foot weapons.
PlatinumGames has been working diligently on Bayonetta 3 since its 2017 reveal. In reality, although Nintendo decided to include Bayonetta 3 in a recent financial earnings report, we’re still waiting for the eagerly anticipated sequel to arrive later this year. Why not read up on the first story and gameplay aspects while we wait for more specifics on the release window. All of that information—as well as more—can be found below as we examine all we currently know about Bayonetta 3.
Bayonetta 3 development
The third game in the PlatinumGames Bayonetta series, which debuted in 2009, is titled Bayonetta 3. The game, which Hideki Kamiya is leading, draws inspiration from his earlier creations, such as the Devil May Cry series. It takes place in a universe where Umbra Witches and Lumen Sages, angels, are at odds with one another. A witch with amnesia named Bayonetta battles through hordes of foes to save the world while accumulating a cast of endearing side characters.
A follow-up to the original game, Bayonetta 2, was released in 2014 for the Wii U. It improved the game’s addictive combat, included some mythological deities, and helped expand its fan base with its chic aesthetic direction and rich characters. Since then, Bayonetta has been waiting to make a triumphant comeback in the background. It’s a fantastic time to start playing the series and catching up on the story because the first two games were converted to the Nintendo Switch in February 2018 and Bayonetta was released in a remastered version on PS4 and Xbox One in February 2020.
The first gameplay footage for Bayonetta 3 was revealed in 2021, and the game was formally announced in 2017 and confirmed to be a Nintendo Switch exclusive in 2019. Since then, PlatinumGames has made very few public comments regarding the game. The most recent significant update was provided by executive producer Hideki Kamiya shortly after the release of the gameplay trailer, who had the following to say(opens in new tab):
“The day when you can play and touch Bayonetta 3 in your hands is undoubtedly approaching. No matter how high your expectations may be, I promise we’ll give an experience that exceeds them all. So relax and look forward to more information coming soon.”
Bayonetta 3 gameplay
The action-adventure game Bayonetta 2, which was released in 2014 and is renowned for its stunning and dramatic combat, will be expanded upon in Bayonetta 3. Although we have only seen a little portion of Bayonetta 3’s gameplay, we have been able to analyse the trailers and discover a few new details.
For instance, we already know that popular gameplay features like Witch Time, Torture Attacks, and Wicked Weaves will be back, albeit in a larger capacity, with Bayonetta being able to launch multiple Torture Attacks simultaneously for maximum impact. Additionally, we know that Bayonetta will get a few new abilities, such as Demon Masquerade, which enables the Witch to momentarily assume a demonic form, and Demon Slave, which builds on the idea of Climax Summons by enabling you to control demonic creatures and carry out a variety of intrusive deeds.
Bayonetta 3 gameplay trailer
During a Nintendo Direct showcase in September 2021, we saw the first Bayonetta 3 gameplay trailer. In it, PlatinumGames showed us our first glimpse of the Nintendo Switch-only game in action and teased new features like the Demon Slave, which lets you command Infernal Demons while they are engaged in combat. View the gameplay trailer for Bayonetta 3 above.
Bayonetta 3 platforms
Exclusive to the Nintendo Switch is Bayonetta 3. Since Nintendo and PlatinumGames are the only companies working on and publishing the game, it won’t be available on PS5, Xbox Series X, or PC. The sequel of the 2009 video game Bayonetta, produced by Sega and afterwards released on PS3 and Xbox 360, was similarly true in 2014. Bayonetta 2 was released by Nintendo on WiiU and later Nintendo Switch.
Bayonetta 3 release date
2022 has been set aside for the release of Bayonetta 3. The launch window was disclosed by the game’s creator PlatinumGames during a Nintendo Direct event in September 2021, which also saw the release of the first Bayonetta 3 gameplay video. With only a few months left in the year, we anticipate PlatinumGames and Nintendo to shortly announce the release date for Bayonetta 3.
Bayonetta 3 story
Although there are some details circulating about the bewitching witch’s upcoming quest, PlatinumGames has remained mum about the Bayonetta 3 plot. The plot is briefly summarised on the official Bayonetta 3 website(opens in new tab) as follows: “The Shibuya district of Tokyo is attacked by mysterious life forms that are neither angels nor demons, and Bayonetta then gracefully enters the scene. How come she’s in Tokyo? How extensive is this new enemy’s invasion, too?”
Interesting questions that lack conclusive solutions. But perhaps by reflecting on the events of Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 — spoilers to come; you have been warned — we can learn something.
If you’ve played the earlier games, you’ll be aware that Bayonetta 2’s ending creates a contradiction that ultimately launches the first game. Despite the inevitable sorrow and loss of both of Bayonetta’s parents, it’s a cheerful note to end it on because the cycle has been closed. Although it appears that in Bayonetta 3, we’ll be playing as the same Bayonetta we’re familiar to in a comparable time period to prior games, the series is no stranger to time travel shenanigans.
Bayonetta 3 teaser trailer
Three years after the release of Bayonetta 2, the first teaser trailer for Bayonetta 3 was unveiled at The Game Awards 2017. This proved that the game was still in active production. Despite the fact that it doesn’t feature any gameplay, this Bayonetta 3 trailer serves as a mood piece intended to give us a taste of the kind of wild, high-octane action we can anticipate from the PlatinumGames sequel.
