The death of Charles Stanley
In Touch Ministries’ founder and longtime senior pastor at Atlanta’s First Baptist Church, Dr. Charles Frazier Stanley, died on Tuesday morning at the age of 90.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Stanley passed away quietly at home, as stated by his successor, Senior Pastor Anthony Georgia.
Who is Charles Stanley?
American Baptist pastor and novelist Charles Frazier Stanley was born on September 25, 1932, and he died on April 18, 2023.
In 2020, he received emeritus status after nearly 50 years as the lead pastor of Atlanta’s First Baptist Church.
Stanley founded In Touch Ministries, serving as its president and having his sermons extensively aired on radio and television.
In addition, he had the honour of serving two consecutive one-year terms as president of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1984 to 1986.
Charles Stanley made it his life’s work to proclaim the gospel.
At the age of 14, he decided to become a pastor because he was passionate about spreading the Word of God. He worked at the First Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, for almost 50 years in this capacity.
In addition to his responsibilities as a pastor, Stanley developed In Touch Ministries, which allowed him to share his sermons and teachings with a wide audience via a variety of media.
His show, The Chapel Hour, debuted in 1972, and In Touch Ministries was founded in 1977 with the goal of strengthening local churches and guiding individuals into a deeper connection with Jesus Christ.
In Touch has been broadcast on the Christian Broadcasting Network since 1978 and has been dubbed into 50 different languages.
It is broadcast on about 500 radio stations, 300 television stations, and a few satellite networks in the US.
In addition to In Touch magazine, the ministry also offers a website where its followers can access its teachings and materials.
The topics covered in Charles Stanley’s sermons were finances, parenting, life crises, emotional issues, relationships, and Protestantism.
He was well recognised for his passionate devotion to the Bible’s inerrancy, which was clearly demonstrated in his instruction.
Despite going through personal challenges, such as a contentious divorce from his wife of more than 40 years, Anna J. Stanley.
After more than 40 years of marriage, Stanley and his wife Anna J. Stanley divorced. Before Anna sought a divorce in 1993 and again in 1995, they had a formal separation.
The marriage produced Becky and Andy Stanley, the children of Charles Stanley.
A judge signed the final divorce decree in 2000.
Due to rumours that Stanley had previously declared he would resign as a pastor if he got divorced, the Southern Baptist Convention briefly became mired in controversy over the divorce.
Despite this, a large majority of Stanley’s churchgoers decided to remain him as pastor as long as he did not get remarried.
Until his dying at the age of 90, Charles Stanley remained dedicated to his ministry and kept up the inspiration and encouragement for his followers.
For years to come, his impact on the Southern Baptist Convention and commitment to Christian service will definitely be recognised.
Charles Stanley’s children have a close relationship and support one another in both their personal and professional endeavours despite taking various courses in life.
