In the Forest Hills School District, Flanagan held the positions of assistant principal at Mercer Elementary and principal of Ayer Elementary prior to joining Madeira.

According to a statement from Forest Hills Superintendent Larry Hook, Flanagan had a great influence on many of kids and employees while working for the district.

Flanagan was well-liked in the neighbourhood and devoted half of his 50 years to helping local students.

He was well recognised for his commitment to his students, as evidenced by his rooftop campout in 2013 to commemorate his students’ donation of $31,000 to the school and his prompt action in the wake of a plane crash close to his campus in 2019.
