Who Was Clive Doyle?
A young Clive and his mother apparently joined the Shepherd’s Rod sect in the early 1950s, only for it to afterwards change its name to the Davidian Seventh-day Adventists. In reality, by 1958, the Australian native had made the conscious decision to leave his secure position as an apprentice cabinet maker in order to further the sect’s cause. In order to speed up his journey to Israel, a kingdom established by God on Earth, he moved to Tasmania for six years before returning to the United States.
Clive had a significant impact on the development of both Lois Roden’s and David Koresh’s (actual name Vernon Howell) theologies, but he was never given the opportunity to advance. He was a part of their instructional video company in 1990 and served as an editor for their newspaper SHEkinah, which was utilised to spread ideas to others, but Texas was his final destination. He had moved his entire family into the Branch Davidian complex just outside of Waco, but presumably it didn’t matter much, nor did his nearly unflinching loyalty to the sect as a whole.
Then, in February 1993, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives attempted to serve an arrest warrant against leader David on charges of possessing a firearm but everything went horribly wrong. It led in a shootout that lasted for more than two hours, followed by a 51-day siege that was only finally broken by a devastating fire, the cause of which is still up for debate. Devastating s ince there were just nine survivors, including Clive’s youngest daughter Shari, 24 other children, and 76 Branch Davidians who perished in the flames.
Clive once described the initial incident as “all hell broke loose — bullets flying through the windows and going through the walls.” He continued, “I witnessed adult guys crying when petrol got on them on the last day… I was ablaze. My hands’ flesh was peeling off, and my jacket was melting. But unlike most of his fellow survivors, he never assigned blame for his wounds or the unfathomable loss he suffered; instead, he insisted that God was behind it all. The only thing he dislikes about this situation is that he was later charged with conspiracy, possessing illegal weapons, and murder.
How Did Clive Doyle Die?
Clive did had to go through a lengthy and intrusive trial in 1994, but he was cleared of all charges since the evidence did not support any illegal activity on his part. He eventually made his way back to Waco, Texas, where he eventually settled down and maintained his belief in David’s theology and ability in every meaning of the word – he thought God had lead David. He and other survivors tried to create a museum there in 1998, but were unsuccessful. A year later, they successfully rebuilt a church there without any major problems or disagreements.
It is important to remember that Clive did not endorse or promote Timothy McVeigh’s 1995 vehicle bombing of an Oklahoma City federal building in retaliation for Waco. Insisting that he “is not any sort of champion from our [the survivors’] point of view,” he acknowledged that he saw “no honour” in his deeds and later expressed worry about the far-right organisations’ infatuation with the siege. Through his 2012 memoir “A Journey to Waco,” his active participation in numerous memorial/anniversary events, and his open interviews, he just sought to promote peace and remembrance.
On June 8, 2022, Clive, an 81-year-old grandpa who had been battling pancreatic cancer, passed suddenly. He was still living in Waco, Texas, but he occasionally travelled back to his own country. This occurred a little more than four years after he also lost his older daughter Karen, who was killed in Pennsylvania roughly three weeks prior to the 25th anniversary of the siege when a drunk driver struck her car.
