According to the Dear Edward official summary, “A 12-year-old child ends up being the only survivor of a plane catastrophe. Unexpected friendships, loves, and communities develop as he and others affected by the tragedy attempt to make sense of what happened.
The Afriqiyah Airways Flight 771 tragedy that occurred in 2010 served as the inspiration for the novel, on which the television series is based, which was published in 2020. All 103 of the passengers and staff onboard died in the catastrophe, with the exception of 9-year-old Ruben Van Assouw.
In a prior interview, author Napolitano discussed the source of inspiration and remarked, “This story just flayed me. I had no idea how the youngster would survive, and I could tell from the tenacity of my fixation that I would have to pen a book that invented a series of events to make him survive.
