There will be one fewer crew member aboard Our Flag Means Death when it sails back out to sea. Guz Khan, who played Blackbeard’s friend Ivan in the ensemble comedy’s first season, said on Twitter that he will not be returning for the just-announced Season 2.
The decision to exclude the lackey from the next second season, Khan claimed in his letter to the fans, was made by a higher power. “This is the business sometimes, he said in his tweet; they might be going in a different creative route, they might be making a financial decision, or they might not have been feeling your boy. But the fun for me is in the voyage itself, which is everything.” Ivan was devotedly one of the Ed Teach’s henchman for the duration of his brief appearances on the show, working closely with Fang (David Fane), with whom he hardly ever parted. Blackbeard’s crew will be a little bit smaller moving forward as a result of his leaving.
Our Flag’s Meaning In addition to delivering a humorous and intriguing historical tale of piracy, Death earned a reputation for itself during its first season thanks to its LGBTQ+ portrayal. It centres on the real-life gentleman pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), who quits his comfortable life in Barbados with his wife and children to become a sailor in order to prove he isn’t a soft-spoken, lily-livered rich lad. Stede demonstrates utter incompetence for the job during the Golden Age of Piracy, and his dysfunctional crew doesn’t help matters either. Fortunately, he meets the renowned pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, very soon after (Taika Waititi). Stede piques Blackbeard’s interest with his refined, gentlemanly manners, and after spending some time with him on board his ship, Revenge, Blackbeard comes to like the unusual pirate and develops feelings for him despite their huge differences.
Izzy Hands from “Our Flag Means Death,” played by Con O’Neill, is depicted standing on a beach with his left hand on his hip. Guz Khan and David Fane, both actors, are standing on either side of him.
Khan is no longer a part of the show, but Darby and Waititi will undoubtedly return to finish the story of the complicated connection between Stede and Teach. Con O’Neill, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen, Leslie Jones, and Fane were all featured in Season 1 along with Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matt Maher, Kristian Nairn, and
Khan’s popularity has recently increased, and his part in Our Flag Means Death only strengthens his resume. As the star of Man Like Mobeen, which received three BAFTA nods, including two for Khan’s performance, he already got some traction in the business. Additionally, Khan played Rolph, the crew’s escape driver in Army of Thieves in the miniseries Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Our Flag Means Death Season 2 has yet to have a release date set. Below is Khan’s letter to the series’ viewers announcing his departure:
