‘Jack Ryan’ on Prime Video’s fourth season finds the title character on his most difficult task yet. Two multinational criminal organisations are planning to merge with the assistance of some very powerful individuals in Washington, DC, and threats are coming from every direction. Ryan is aware that uncovering the identity of the conspiracy’s mastermind and, more crucially, the part played by the CIA under the direction of individuals like Thomas Miller, is crucial.
The CIA is in desperate need of someone like Ryan right now. But he presents his resignation from the position of deputy director of the CIA at the start of the third episode. He was scheduled to be officially confirmed a few days after this. Ryan did it, why? Let’s investigate.
Why Did Jack Ryan Resign?
Jack Ryan has been a part of missions that put him squarely in the heart of the action over the course of the four seasons that we have seen him. He has travelled the world in an effort to neutralise the risks that could endanger the entire planet. He has encountered and battled some really strong and deadly individuals throughout all of this. Politics is the one thing he has been able to avoid. However, he learns that politics will play a significant role in his new job when he is nominated for the position of deputy director at the start of the fourth season.
The appointment of Jack Ryan as deputy director would have followed Elizabeth Wright’s confirmation as CIA director. Wright and Ryan, though, come from very different backgrounds. Wright has a reputation for following the rules exactly when on a task. She is renowned for exercising control and managing circumstances with a deep awareness of how they can impact the nation and the repercussions of her choices. Ryan, on the other hand, is viewed as a careless asset who has disobeyed the rules far too frequently to be expected to respect them.
He tends to trust his instincts rather than follow procedures and often takes chances that could easily result in a negative conclusion. The Senate Committee, whose job it is to determine if Ryan is qualified for the position, is concerned about the precedent Ryan would establish if he continued his practises after looking into his background. In the hearing, they bring up the circumstances in Russia, where Ryan gave Russian Luca responsibility for a crucial choice that would have had disastrous repercussions.
Fortunately for Ryan, everything has always turned out well. The risks he took paid off and led to the outcomes he wanted. The Committee worries, though, that he might run out of luck and inadvertently do something dreadful. They are more confident in Wright but remain cautious when it comes to Ryan. In light of the unrest developing in Myanmar, Nigeria, and Mexico, Ryan understands that it is increasingly crucial for him to follow up on leads and learn what is going on with the fusion of all these forces. But he must be present on the pitch to perform his best.
Any goodwill Ryan has with the Committee would be entirely destroyed if he went on another black ops assignment. Even worse, it might reflect negatively on Wright and harm her prospects of being confirmed. Ryan is unwilling to take that chance. He therefore decides to leave his position. He can then assist Chavez in finding Chao Fah and put an end to the evil schemes being carried out by unidentified powers. Wright wouldn’t face criticism without him around, and her confirmation would proceed without incident. The President acknowledges Ryan’s legitimate point and accepts his resignation, but not before recommending Greer as a possible replacement.
