Sofia Gilberto, Astrud’s granddaughter, used social media to inform everyone of her passing.

She died on June 5th, 2023, at her Philadelphia home, according to the post. Her cause of death was not mentioned in the post, though.

Even though Astrud and Joao Gilberto have since reconnected, her passing nonetheless affected her family.

Joo Marcelo was the name of their kid. Sadly, the couple eventually divorced.

Overview of Asturd Gilberto’s life

Astrud, the wife of Joao Gilberto, experienced plenty of hardships.

She gained fame by working with Stan Getz and Joo Gilberto on the legendary 1963 album “Getz/Gilberto,” where she sang vocals for two tunes.

Astrud had previously performed in Brazil with her husband, though she was new to professional recording.

She got a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and a nomination for Best Vocal Performance by a Female for the song “The Girl from Ipanema,” for which her distinctive and alluring voice was a key factor in its success.

Astrud’s solo career flourished after “The Girl from Ipanema” became popular.

“The Astrud Gilberto Album,” her debut solo album, was released in 1965.

She widened her song catalogue throughout the 1970s by recording songs in a variety of tongues, including Portuguese, English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, and Japanese.

Astrud’s son Marcelo joined her band in 1982 as a bass player and toured with her for more than ten years.

On her albums “Live in New York” (1996) and “Temperance” (1997), he also contributed as a co-producer.

Astrud did not formally retire; she just announced in 2002 that she would not be performing in public for the foreseeable future.

Her contributions to music are still honoured and valued.

Astrud Gilberto received numerous honours throughout the course of her career, such as the Latin Jazz USA Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1992 and entry into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame in 2002.

Who is Joao Gilberto?

Astrud Gilberto’s ex-husband and guitarist Joao Gilberto was a pioneering Bossa Nova composer and songwriter.

He combined the silky tones of “cool jazz” with Brazilian samba music in the late 1950s.

For the album “Getz/Gilberto,” he teamed up with American saxophonist Stan Getz in 1963, which was one of their memorable collaborations.

This ground-breaking album had a major role in popularising the alluring Brazilian sound throughout the world.

The album’s English tracks include Astrud Gilberto singing, including the well-known duet “The Girl from Ipanema.”

This song became a big hit and contributed to the album’s popularity.

In actuality, “Getz/Gilberto” won three Grammys, including the esteemed Album of the Year award.

For the first time, a jazz record received this kind of acclaim.
