Ben Is Back (2018) — 82%
Ben’s mother did everything in her power to keep him from returning to his bad habits after he got out of rehab. Ben Is Back, which was elevated by a solid story and strong performances, addressed very genuine and difficult topics that other movies have shied away from. In the movie, Newton played Ivy Burns, Holly’s (Julia Roberts) child and Ben’s sister (Lucas Hedges). Ben Is Back has been a bit beneath the radar, yet it still managed to get good reviews from the reviewers.
Blockers (2018) — 84%
The movie Blockers was about a group of parents who wanted to prevent their kids from losing their virginity on prom night. One of the parents was Lisa Decker (Leslie Mann), whose clinginess irritated Julie (Kathryn Newton). Critics applauded Blockers for its wit, humour, and characters, and film received a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes as a result. The Tomatometer, in contrast, did not match the audience rating, which was a “Rotten” rating of 51%.
Detective Pikachu (2019) — 68%
Over the years, there have been numerous animated Pokémon movies made, but only one live-action movie. The Nintendo 3DS game of the same name, which starred Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith as the starring roles, was roughly adapted into Detective Pikachu. With the release of the 2020 movie Freaky, which she co-starred in with Vince Vaughn, Newton maintained her collaboration with Blumhouse. As expected, the movie attracted similarities to Freaky Friday because its plot involved the body swapping of its two major characters. Newton played the notorious serial killer known as the “Blissfield Butcher” in Freaky, which, in contrast to Freaky Friday, leaned towards the slasher subgenre. Christopher Landon, who authored the script for one of Newton’s first movies, Paranormal Activity 4, also served as the film’s director and writer. Two teens named Margaret (Newton) and Mark were sentenced to repeat the same day over and over again in a Groundhog Day-style time loop. The two eventually met, fell in love, and realised the peculiar beauty of their circumstance. Later, they learned that the loop might be broken, but they had to determine whether doing so was the best course of action. The Map of Little Perfect Things now has a 76% Tomatometer score after receiving Rotten Tomatoes’ Fresh Certification.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) — 90%
Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand), who is seeking justice for her murdered daughter, rented three billboards to raise awareness of the unresolved crime. The residents of Ebbing did not like the billboards and demanded that they be taken down right away. Mildred insisted on moving on despite all of the obstacles in her path. In Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Newton played Angela Hayes, Mildred’s late daughter, in flashback scenes. The 2017 drama, which received an audience score of 87% and a Tomatometer score of 90%, has now become Newton’s highest rated picture.
