In 1974, Lanny made his professional wrestling debut with the All-South Wrestling Alliance. In his first contest, he was defeated by Wayne Cowan. He stayed with the promotion for a few months before switching to his father, Angelo Poffo’s, International Championship Wrestling, first. He also competed in a number of matches for the Continental Wrestling Association.
Poffo Joined the WWF in 1985
In July 1985, the wrestler made his WWF debut. He worked for the promotion for seven years and rose to fame for throwing frisbees into the ring with a poem directed at the heel on them. After delivering the poem, he wouldss the frisbees into the crowd.
Poffo departed the WWF in 1992 and joined World Championship Wrestling, a rival organisation, in 1995. In January 2020, he competed in his last match for Survival Championship Wrestling. He made an appearance on AEW Dynamite the same year to honour the legendary wrestlers of Memphis Wrestling.
In 2015, the wrestler oversaw Randy Savage’s induction into the WWE Hall of Fame. The anti-smoking book Limericks from the Heart and Lungs was written by him; he was also a published author! And The Genius of Lanny Poffo, a biographical comic.

“I was sorry to learn of Lanny Poffo’s demise. In the ROH locker room and at the broadcast table in 2019, Lanny was a delight to have around. He praised today’s product and was astounded by the athleticism and charisma of today’s athletes. Over the years, we communicated by text; may he rest in peace, wrote sports analyst Ian Riccaboni.
“Saddened to learn of the loss of Lanny Poffo, a.k.a. The Genius to us ’80s/’90s WWF marks,” tweeted YouTuber Steve Shives. Although he was frequently discussed alongside his brother, he deserved to be honoured on his own as one of the most notable labourers and speakers of his day.
