After her album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” came out in 1998, Lauryn Hill dropped out of sight. With hits like “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and “Ex-Factor,” this album solidified the Fugees’ position as one of the most popular hip-hop groups. Five Grammys were given to the rapper-singer, including Album of the Year, Best R&B Album, and Best New Artist. Fans and critics still talk about how important the record was. The album was ranked No. 10 on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time” in 2020.
Fans expected Hill to do a lot more in the years after her first solo album, which got great reviews. People were sad that Hill didn’t release any more studio albums, though. During a talk on “Hill told the “Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums” podcast (via People) that she had problems with the music industry. She said, “It’s crazy that no one from my label has ever called me and asked, ‘How can we help you make another album?'” Ever … ever. Did I say ever? Ever.” But that didn’t make Hill stop making music all together. The star is still going strong when it comes to recording and performing.
Lauryn Hill hasn’t quit making music
Even though Lauryn Hill isn’t putting out any new albums, she’s still making waves in the music business. The New York Post says that she was on Nas’s 2021 album “King’s Disease II.” She sang on his song “Nobody,” in which she talked about leaving the music business. Hill rapped, “I’ve spent all my time working for my freedom now. Why would I join them when I know I can beat them now?” HipHopDX says that the well-known duo also did the music for the trailer for the 2023 biopic “Big George Foreman.” On Nas’ second album, “It Was Written,” fans can hear a version of their song “If I Ruled the World.”
“The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” Hill’s album from 2021, reached new heights. According to Revolt TV, Hill was the first female rapper to have a diamond album because it sold more than 10 million copies. The Recording Industry Association of America put out a message on Twitter that said, “Welcome, @MsLaurynHill, to the RIAA Diamond Club! The album #TheMiseducationofLaurynHill is now certified ten times.” “Legendary,” wrote one user. Someone else wrote, “10 million sold. It’s great.”
Inside Lauryn Hill’s recent performances
Lauryn Hill hasn’t taken a break from performing for a while. According to Variety, Hill performed with the Fugees at a Global Citizen concert in New York City in September 2021. Their appearance was important because it was the first time they had seen each other in almost 16 years. The trio and the rest of the group played seven songs, including hits like “Ready or Not” and “Killing Me Softly.” “We’re still cooking it,” Hill told the crowd. Their performance gave people a taste of their “Diaspora Calling” world tour, which would last until December 2021. Hill said in a statement (quoted in another Variety article), “As I celebrate 25 years with the Fugees, my first memory is that we promised from the start that we would be more than just a band. We’d be a voice for those who don’t have one, and in these hard times, I’m thankful that God brought us together.”
In 2022, Hill also did a live show. In September of that year, she wrote on Instagram, “Just got back from having a GREAT time with the people of Belo Horizonte at the Festiva Planeta Brasil…” She posted a wide shot of herself singing in front of a huge crowd with the caption. Fans were blown away by her performance. One user said, “Lauryn, I took a 16-hour bus ride to get to your concert, and it was worth every second. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. You are unbelievable.”
