  • DCS

‘Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent’ on Citytv will begin production in August. The programme is a part of the illustrious “Law & Order” franchise created by Dick Wolf, which also includes popular ongoing programmes including “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” and “Law & Order: Organised Crime.” Wolf and René Balcer’s ‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent,’ starring Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe, is the source of the name for the television series. NBC broadcast “Criminal Intent” from 2001 until 2011. However, the show will not borrow any of its plots from its namesake.

The Canadian-written, Canadian-produced, and Canadian-staring “Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent” will “showcase original Canadian stories. ‘Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent’ follows an elite team of detectives as they look into high-profile crime and corruption in metro Toronto as a psychological thriller wrapped in a criminal probe, according to the logline.

The series’ primary shooting location is in Toronto, Ontario. Filming on the series is not anticipated to be impacted by the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike because it is a Canadian production. One of the busiest production hubs in the world is in this city. A number of continuing television programmes are produced in Toronto, including “Black Mirror,” “The Boys,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” “Reacher,” “Wednesday,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Mayor of Kingstown,” etc.

Vancouver-based Together with Citytv, Lark Productions and Cameron Pictures Inc. produce the series. The ‘Law & Order’ franchise’s home network, Universal Television, will handle the show’s global distribution. The first season, which consists of ten hour-long episodes, is set to debut on Citytv in the spring of 2024. Although the network hasn’t yet made any cast announcements for the show, it is likely to happen soon.

“The worldwide popular Law & Order franchise’s cases have a timeless appeal that keeps viewers interested week after week on Citytv. To bring Canadian stories to this famous format, we’re happy to be working with Lark Productions and Cameron Pictures Inc., said Hayden Mindell, Senior Vice President, Television, Rogers Sports & Media. “Our team is thrilled for the rare chance to work with Cameron Pictures to create a distinctively Canadian version of Criminal Intent. Erin Haskett, the president of Lark Productions, continued, “We have been working with Rogers Sports & Media since early last year and are happy to share the original concept of the adaptation with audiences.

This is not the first instance of “Law & Order” to be adapted for a foreign audience. Paris Enquêtes Criminelles in France, Law & Order: Division of Field Investigations and Law & Order: Criminal Intent in Russia, and Law & Order: UK in the UK are all part of the Dick Wolf franchise.
