The 2019 shooting death of Nipsey Hussle was nearly four years ago. Eric Holder Jr. was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to at least 60 years in prison by the Los Angeles Times.
The unanimous verdict against Holder Jr. was announced in a Los Angeles County courtroom on July 6, 2022. On February 22, the outlet reported that Judge H. Clay Jacke had sentenced the Crips gang member to 25 years to life in a state prison, plus an extra 25 years to life because of the gun he used to kill Hussle. Jacke also gave Holder Jr. 10 more years in prison for the two counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter related to the two people who were hit by gunfire during Hussle’s shooting in a strip mall.
Holder Jr.’s sentencing has been pushed back five months. It was supposed to happen on September 15, 2022. AP says that Holder Jr. and Hussle knew each other as kids because they were both in the same South LA street gang. At his trial, eyewitnesses and surveillance footage were among the “overwhelming” pieces of evidence that led to his conviction.
Hussle was shot and killed outside of his LA clothing store, Marathon Clothing, on March 31, 2019. He was 33 years old. He had a daughter named Emani and a son named Kross. He also had a longtime girlfriend named Lauren London. LA Deputy District Attorney John McKinney spoke up for Hussle during the trial’s closing arguments last summer. He said that the late rapper “wanted to change the neighborhood” before his untimely death.
On April 11, 2019, friends, family, and about 21,000 fans gathered at what was then the Staples Center to remember Hussle and his life. Since then, Hussle’s peers in the music industry have continued to honor him by paying tribute to him and living by the many quotes he said.
