Taika Waititi, the executive producer and star of the blockbuster pirate rom-com series Our Flag Means Death, said that Season 2 will begin filming in October in a brand-new setting. Our Flag Means Death’s upcoming season will be produced in New Zealand instead of Los Angeles, according to an online portal that took Waititi’s interview.
This information follows the official second-season renewal, which was something we were all anticipating after the enormous cliffhanger at the end of Season 1. While the exact release date for Season 2 of Our Flag Means Death is still unknown, the fact that filming will begin in a few months is a strong hint that Blackbeard (Waititi) and Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) will be making a comeback in 2023. In addition, shifting the production to New Zealand indicates that HBO Max is pleased with the performance of the series and is willing to invest more money to bring the entire cast and staff closer to the ocean.
While Season 1 of Our Flag Means Death looked fantastic in a LA setting, Season 2 will look much better thanks to filming in New Zealand. Waititi expressed his excitement over the news in these words:
“We’re going to shoot in New Zealand, and we expect to start filming by October. The final one was filmed in LA. We’re going to New Zealand, which is surrounded by the ocean, because it seems strange to try to do something there since it is all on the water. One of the things I’m most looking forward to for the coming year is that.
The first season of Our Flag Means Death explores the complex bond between Blackbeard, the bloodiest pirate of the Seven Seas, and Stede, the Gentleman Pirate who abhors inflicting damage on others. The series explores subjects like genre representation, queer love, and toxic masculinity, so the contrast between the two major characters serves a purpose beyond simple comedic effect.
Waititi, director David Jenkins, producer Garrett Basch, and actor Dan Halsted are the executive producers of Our Flag Means Death. Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matt Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen, and Leslie Jones are all featured in the cast of the show. Guz Khan won’t be a part of Season 2, but HBO Max hasn’t yet announced that all of the supporting cast members will be coming back. Khan portrayed Ivan, a member of Blackbeard’s crew, in the first season.
HBO Max currently has Our Flag Means Death Season 1 available. Season 2 has still not been given a release date. When the June 17 release of Lightyear approaches, be sure to read our whole interview with Waititi.
