The main character of “Truth Be Told” is Poppy Parnell, a former investigative journalist. Poppy is portrayed by actress Octavia Spencer in the film. For his role as Madam C. J. Walker in the Netflix limited series “Self Made,” Spencer is well-known. Poppy reopens an old case that she has a personal connection to, and she then starts a true-crime podcast. In the show, Poppy has two sisters and is married to Ingram Rhoades. The oldest of three sisters, Poppy is. She is the offspring of Capstones’ leader and former police officer Leander “Shreve” Scoville. Elinor, Poppy’s mother, however, died a long time ago.
Viewers find out more about Poppy’s past and her complex connection with her father in the second season of the show. Shreve burns an adoption certificate in the season 2 finale, “Last Exit…Oakland,” hinting that Poppy is not his legitimate daughter. In the third episode of season 3, Poppy finds love letters that Alexander, a man, had sent to her mother. She confronts Shreve as a result and demands an explanation. Shreve admits that he adopted Poppy and is not her biological father during their talk. Alexander Troy, her mother’s former partner, is revealed by Shreve to be the child’s real birth father.
Why Did Shreve Adopt Poppy?
Finally revealed in the third season is Poppy’s real parentage. While Poppy’s adoption and gradual revelation of her past in the second season create a significant cliffhanger. However, as Poppy learns about her mother’s belongings from her aunt, the solutions are made clear over the course of the following episodes. A number of letters from Alexander Troy, her biological father, are among the treasures. Poppy, however, has known Shreve as her father for the majority of her existence. The viewers are already aware that Shreve took Poppy in. The fact that Poppy is Elinor’s biological daughter from a different man, however, calls into question his choice to adopt Poppy.
Poppy discovers the truth about her adoption from Shreve in the third episode, “Here She Shall See No Enemy.” Shreve admits that Elinor, her mother, had a previous relationship with Alexander. Elinor did, however, briefly leave Shreve after they were married in order to be with Alexander. Elinor recognised her error, though, and went back to Shreve. Elinor was pardoned by Shreve, and the couple went on to expand their family. During the encounter, Shreve also reveals that Elinor was already carrying Poppy when he first met her.
Ultimately, Shreve did not care about Elinor’s errors and embraced the woman and her unborn daughter unconditionally. Poppy finds solace in the knowledge that Shreve has always loved her mother despite the delicate circumstances surrounding her adoption. They are a family in the truest sense of the word because Shreve is Poppy’s father even though they are not biologically connected. At the conclusion of the second season, Poppy adopts the Scoville family name in place of her mother’s last name, demonstrating the same.
