Michael and Paul Clarkson, who made “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” made the horror drama “Red Rose.” The British drama is about a group of teenagers whose lives are turned upside down when they get a phone app called Red Rose. After the app seemingly claims their friend’s life, the group decides to investigate the matter and uncover the truth. But they also have to avoid the app’s deadly features. So, people must have questions about what the app makes and how it works. Here is everything you need to know about who made Red Rose and how it works. SPOILERS AHEAD!
Who Created Red Rose?
In “Red Rose,” the making of the app with the same name is a big part of the story until the very end. It is first shown in the first episode of the series, called “It’s Grim Up North,” and kills a teenage girl named Alyssa. Later, the app shows up on the phone of another teen girl in Bolton, Greater Manchester. Her name is Rochelle “Roch” Mason. After Roch dies because of the app, her friends, the Dickhead, led by Wren, look into the app. As the story goes on, the group finds clues that help them figure out the truth about how Red Rose was made.
In the last episode, “The Gardener,” Jaya Mahajan finds out that Jacob Taylor made the app that kills people. Jacob was in Alyssa’s class, and he liked her a lot. But Jacob was shy, so he couldn’t tell Alyssa how he felt. So, Jacob used his coding skills to make an app called Red Rose, which will help him learn more about Alyssa and get closer to her. Jacob makes the app with some help from his dark web friends, especially The Gardener.
Even though Jacob doesn’t want to, his online friends force him to tell Alyssa how he feels about her. Jacob is crushed when Alyssa turns him down. The Gardener takes the chance to take control of the app from Jacob. The unknown person changes the app and uses it to spy on Alyssa and make her life miserable. In the end, Alyssa dies because of the torture. The Gardener and his friends then kill Jacob so they can play their cruel game with Roch and her friends again in Bolton. Jacob Taylor made Red Rose, but The Gardener turned it into a dangerous app that makes teens miserable and kills them.
How Does Red Rose App Work?
Even though the Red Rose is important to the overall story of the show, not much is said about how it works. It looks like you can only download the app if you are invited, since Roch, Wren, and others get a text message with the link to download it. When the user opens the app, it takes a selfie and adds a rose filter to it. At first, Red Rose is kind to its users, but then it slowly starts to hurt them. In reality, The Gardner and his group run the app through the dark web.
The app tortures the user’s mind by showing them morphed videos of their loved ones. For example, Roch can see and hear Gloria Mason, her mother who has died. But the app also forces users to do more and more dangerous tasks, which hurts their mental stability and makes them feel bad. Because of this, the users are pushed to the edge. The app can also hide from the user’s phone, can’t be deleted, and takes over the calls and messaging apps on the phone. It sends video of the users to a group of people who like to watch the teens get picked on.
In the end, Red Rose seems less like an app and more like a way to take advantage of the users’ problems. It is run through the dark web, and a group of sadists like “The Gardener” control how it works from the outside. So, the app doesn’t have any set features and can use any technology around the user to make them feel like bad things are going to happen. Sadists who made the app seem to have only one goal: to torture teenagers by making them face scary situations. So, Red Rose looks at the bad things about modern technology and how teens are affected by social media and the internet.
