Why Did Melissa Huckaby Murder, Sandra Cantu? Where Is She Now?

  • DCS

Sandra Cantu’s death was blamed on Melissa Huckaby. “See No Evil: Someone You Trust” on Investigation Discovery tells the story of how 8-year-old Sandra Cantu was killed in Tracy, California, which is usually a quiet place.

When Sandra’s body was found in a nearby pond, the case took a shocking turn. At first, the police were looking for her.

The show follows the police investigation and how CCTV footage is used to find out who did it.

What happened to Sandra Cantu?

In the days that followed, Sandra’s family, including her father and stepmother, looked for her. They hoped to see Sandra soon, but a few weeks later, her body was found in a nearby cotton field. It was the worst thing they could have imagined.

Soon after the tragedy happened, it became clear that it was a hate crime against Latinos like Sandra.

Even though they hadn’t seen each other in many years, the father’s love for his daughter hadn’t changed. This wrong did him in, leaving him broken and empty.

Sandra’s death at age 8 ended her hopes of becoming an artist, which was something she really wanted.

Sandra, who was nine years old, went missing for no clear reason. This scared her family and gave them some hope that she would be found soon.

Unfortunately, the search for Sandra was fruitless for days until a sad truth was found in an irrigation pond near the family’s home.

When the police opened the suitcase they found at the bottom of the pond, they saw a horror they could never have imagined: Sandra’s lifeless body with signs of abuse, asphyxiation, and finally murder.

Then it was clear that Sandra had been woken up in her sleep so that she could be taken away from her family and treated so cruelly. Even though police have spent a lot of time looking for the person responsible, no one has been found.

Who killed Sandra Cantu?

At first, it was hard for the police in Tracy, California, to figure out who killed 8-year-old Sandra Cantu because the suitcase and irrigation pond where her body was found didn’t give them many clues.

The family of the victim didn’t have any known enemies, so it wasn’t clear why they would have been attacked in such a brutal way.

But the police did find out that the Cantu family had put a camera on their front porch not long before the murder.

Officers looked at hours of footage from the camera, but all it showed was Sandra walking out of the frame. It didn’t tell them anything about what happened to her.

During the investigation, Sandra’s mother, Maria, told the police that Sandra’s Sunday school teacher, Melissa Huckaby, had texted her saying that something had been stolen on the day Sandra went missing.

During Sandra’s funeral, Huckaby went to the police and told them she had found a note that said Sandra’s body was in a suitcase that was thrown into the water near Bacchetti Road and Whitehall Road.

Even though the note seemed odd, the police didn’t know why Huckaby got it. But when the police checked out the area around the irrigation pond, they soon found out more.

A person who saw a purple SUV near the pond on the day Sandra went missing went to the police.

The witness also saw a woman run quickly out of the woods and say that she had to stop her car to go to the bathroom.

The purple SUV was Melissa Huckaby’s, which was shown by the CCTV footage from Cantu’s front porch.

From the video, the witness was able to tell who Huckaby was. The police caught Huckaby right away and charged her with murder.

Where is Melissa Huckaby now?

Many people were interested in Melissa’s case, especially after she decided on the spot to take a plea deal in the middle of the trial.

She pleaded guilty to two charges: murder and kidnapping. The charges of rape with an object other than a human body and poisoning were dropped.

The judge, on the other hand, didn’t care much about what Melissa did and gave her a life sentence without the chance of parole at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla.

Melissa seemed to want to take responsibility for what she had done, but it was too late. Justice had already been done, but it had cost a lot.
