Robbie Pickering, author
Video Collider of the Day

Audiences will learn about the fearless, forthright woman whose interviews resulted in the exposure of one of the largest political scandals in American history in this little-known real story. John N. Mitchell, Richard Nixon’s devoted attorney general, is forced to make a decision in Gaslit between the president and his famous socialite wife, Martha Mitchell. Frank and nervous Martha is renowned for calling reporters after her evening drink to explain what she had discovered while poring over her husband’s paperwork and listening in on his chats. The 1972 story takes place in this manner. Although this was unusual behavior for a political figure’s spouse, Martha firmly supported her husband and his party’s choices. But after the Watergate break-in, Martha reads some alarming information over her husband’s shoulder and publicly accuses the president of being involved. As she is thrown into the political spotlight, Martha tells reporters that she is not concerned about the results of her decisions and laments that she is defending democracy and the interests of the American people.
Unluckily for Martha, she discovers quickly that Nixon’s staff will stop at nothing to quiet her. In this gripping series, viewers discover the terrible details of the constitutional crisis that sparked President Nixon’s impeachment trial and resignation. The political thriller is a thought-provoking portrayal of some horrific American political history, focusing on the unsung hero, a quiet woman in a pink pillbox hat, complete with wiretapping, violent struggles, kidnappings, and wonderful 1970s fashion. The minimalist set design, Matt Ross’s spry direction, and main actors Julia Roberts and Sean Penn, who play the emotionally intense characters of Martha and John, have all received praise from audiences.
