The media source has reported that the White House compound was evacuated on Sunday night at or about 8:45 p.m. while fire and rescue officials entered the facility to conduct a quick test.
According to a CBS News story, the white powder was discovered by law enforcement officers in a storage space in a cabinet that is frequently used by White House staff members and visitors to keep cell phones.
Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement to the BBC that the white powder was discovered by Secret Service agents “inside a work area” of the West Wing.
Anthony continued by saying that the fire department had been contacted right away and that the white powder had been deemed “non-hazardous.” The White House complex was reopened shortly after the probe, and the white substance was sent for testing. The Secret Service reportedly claimed, according to AP News, “The item was sent for further evaluation and an investigation into the cause and manner of how it entered the White House is pending.”
