The Mosquito Coast is coming to a close. After two seasons, it was confirmed that Apple TV+ had terminated the program and would not be airing a third. Season 2 of the program debuted on Apple TV+ in November after the show’s initial launch on the streaming service in 2021. On January 6, the streamer released the season finale, which also acts as the series finale.
The series essentially served as a prequel story leading up to the events of the original books that the story is based on, thus in a sense the plot will advance. The series was created by Neil Cross for Apple TV+ and is based on Paul Theroux’s original book of the same name. Theroux previously revealed to Deadline where season 3 would go if The Mosquito Coast is renewed that there was still room to go on with another season before entirely bridging that gap.
If there is a third season, it would transition to the book’s search for a utopian community and the movie, he said. “At the conclusion of the second season, however, it is unclear whether Allie is involved in this or if Margo is acting alone. The cliffhanger ends there.”
