Nikki Sixx anticipated a heavily theatrical heavy metal band, and when he saw Lee playing, he knew he had found his drummer. Lee was persuaded by Sixx to quit Studio 19 and join the Mötley Crüe band.

Vince Neil, a singer buddy from high school, was proposed by Lee to complete the new band. Mötley Crüe released their debut album Too Fast for Love in 1981 on their own independent label.

Mötley Crüe was subsequently signed by Elektra Records, a Warner Music Group record label, and Too Fast For Love was reissued in 1982. Mötley Crüe then issued a string of hugely successful albums, including Dr. Feelgood (1988), Girls, Girls, Girls (1987), Theatre of Pain (1985), and Shout at the Devil (1983). (1989).
