Because Top Gun: Maverick is coming to theatres this December, be ready for your last flight inspections. That’s right, the movie, which has already made over a billion dollars at the box office, will make a brief two-week return to regular and IMAX theatres for the holiday season, giving viewers the chance to see director Joseph Kosinski’s legacy sequel once more. I wonder if Santa can keep up with Mach 10?
With the immersive 1.90:1 expanded aspect ratio returning to screens, the theatrical re-release, which runs from December 2 through December 15, will give IMAX viewers the chance to experience the film’s flight sequences as if they were in the cockpit with the Dagger Squad. These sequences fill the entire screen and provide viewers with the closest experience to experiencing real G’s—and real danger—thanks to six IMAX-certified cameras and technological innovations only found in a Tom Cruise film.
Prior to the movie’s December 23 streaming debut on Paramount+, the hub for its production studio, Paramount Pictures, the theatrical re-release will take place. There is no escaping the film’s complete dominance, propelled on by a good ol’ blockbuster story of heart and determination. It is currently available for purchase digitally and in physical formats, including 4K Ultra HD, possibly the closest thing home viewers can get to IMAX.
According to Chris Aronson, President of Domestic Distribution for Paramount Pictures, “Top Gun: Maverick truly epitomises the magic of the moviegoing experience, and we wanted to give fans the opportunity to once again enjoy this cinematic spectacle as it was meant to be seen.” “Top Gun: Maverick feels like the ideal time to return to theatres so that viewers everywhere can once again appreciate how special this movie is,” the director said.
After the events of 1986’s Top Gun, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell continues his exploits when he is called back to the Fighter Weapons School to train a new group of pilots for a potentially deadly mission, including Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his deceased former RIO, Goose. Maverick, which is officially the fifth highest grossing film in domestic cinema history, captivated audiences when it debuted over Memorial Day weekend. Its dominance didn’t end there, and the movie is unquestionably one of the best of the year. It dominated the box office to surpass James Cameron’s Titanic as Paramount’s highest-grossing movie ever while reuniting familiar actors (like Val Kilmer’s Tom “Iceman” Kazansky) and introducing new ones.
With Saturn Awards and Grammy nominations for its soundtrack’s lead single, “Hold My Hand” by Lady Gaga, it’s also fitting in well with this year’s awards season. There’s even some speculation that it might break through and win a few Academy Awards. Anyone can speculate as to whether that will actually occur, but there is no doubt that Maverick and the rest of the Dagger Squad are at least a contender.
Beginning on December 2, Top Gun: Maverick, which also stars Jennifer Connelly, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis, Danny Ramirez, and Monica Barbaro, will return to theaters. Below is a link to the movie’s trailer:
