Who was Vladimir Makei?
Vladimir Makei is a politician from Belarus who held the position of foreign minister for nearly three decades.
He was Alexander Lukashenko’s chief of staff since 2012 and was born on August 5, 1958, in the Byelorussian SSR’s Hamlet of Niekrasevicy.
He openly backed and justified Russia’s and Belarus’s participation in the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
Makei, a proponent of close ties between Moscow and Minsk, claimed that the West had provoked the war and that the Ukrainian authorities should accept the Russian terms of peace after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February.
In April 2004, Makei was chosen to lead Lukashenko’s government.
He held the positions of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Austria from September 2007 to December 2008 while also holding concurrent accreditations as the Ambassador to Hungary, Slovenia, and Slovakia. On December 27, 2008, he was appointed foreign affairs minister.
Since then, he has retained this role. President Alexander Lukashenko named him chief of staff in 2012.
Makei also made sure Belarus maintained its sovereignty while remaining open to the rest of the globe.
He mediated a number of commercial agreements with foreign nations that permitted Belarusian products to enter the international market without giving up its sovereignty or independence.
In order to foster understanding between people from various backgrounds and cultures, he also met with world leaders on a number of occasions.
