The layoffs, which were announced by Google CEO Sundar Pichai in a blog post, will affect workers in offices around the world.

In addition, Google's parent company, Alphabet Inc., is also cutting 1,500 jobs from its Verily health-focused subsidiary, and 500 from its Intrinsic software development subsidiary.

This brings the total number of layoffs to 14,000, or 7% of Alphabet's global workforce.

The cuts come as the technology industry faces a slowdown in demand due to the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

It is estimated that the tech industry has lost over 51,000 jobs in the past few months, with four of the U.S.'s biggest tech companies.
