A Black Hole: A Disney Project in the Works

According to reports, Disney is working on a film and television series based on the science fiction movie “The Black Hole” from 1979. Given that the major studio has been working on the project for years, the movie may be a remake of the original. It is unclear, however, whether the series will be a prequel or sequel to the first movie, a remake, or a stand-alone venture taking place in the same universe. Gary Nelson’s 1979 movie, which takes place in 2130, centres on the crew of the USS Palomino after they come upon a black hole beside the long-lost USS Cygnus. In the 2010s, Disney was working on a remake of the science fiction movie with director Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with the studio on ‘Tron: Legacy’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ which starred Tom Cruise. ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Dune’ co-writers Ridley Scott and Jon Spaihts collaborated with Kosinski on a draught. Due to the script’s resemblance to Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar,” the project was shelved.

Although Kosinski made it apparent that he hadn’t totally thrown out the option of working on a movie based on the 1979 picture, it is unknown if he is still committed to the Disney project. “I still believe that the original version of that film is among Disney’s most original productions. It’s crazy. Because it is not science fiction, the thought of travelling to a black hole is nonetheless one of those things that is incredibly exciting. They are real, and all of the effects that surround them are based on actual physics. So, the voyage itself makes for a fantastic story. Kosinski told TheWrap, “I really, at this time, haven’t figured out what that would be for me.

The specifics of the television series are being kept under wraps. It is obvious that Disney is determined to making “The Black Hole” into a franchise, regardless of the subject matter of the show. When the Hollywood powerhouse released the 1979 movie on Disney+ and in Blu-ray in 2019, it was clear that Disney was interested in the work.

Although ‘The Black Hole’ was not well received by critics when it was first released, its production value was praised. The movie received nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography at the Academy Awards. Since then, science fiction fans have praised it as a cult classic. Maximilian Schell (The Man in the Glass Booth), Anthony Perkins (Psycho), Robert Forster (Jackie Brown), Joseph Bottoms (The Dove), Yvette Mimieux (The Time Machine), Ernest Borgnine (Marty), etc. are among the actors who appear in the movie.
