Since the 1980s, high school comedy have gained popularity. But nothing has ever surpassed the success of American Pie, and possibly nothing ever will. American Pie, a film series that grew into a sizable franchise, is essentially a teen sex comedy that broke box office records almost immediately. Over a 23-year period beginning in 1999, the film series produced four sequels and five spin-offs.
With four films in the original American Pie series and five in the later spin-off series, a total of nine comedies were produced, generating over a billion dollars in revenue for the entire franchise. Aside from their box office success, the films’ dialogue and characters have become memes, making them renowned in the teen comedy genre.
All of the franchise’s plots are based on characters created by Adam Herz, and East Great Falls High School continues to be the only setting shared by all nine movies. Since each American Pie sequel continues where the previous one left off, the four films in the series are somewhat interconnected. The five American Pie Presents spin-off films, however, are entirely standalone tales with no connection to the first four films.
The American Pie series is a chaotic joyride of high school pals and their sexual antics, starting with the first episode in 1999 and ending with American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules. Now that there are so many characters and plots to follow, it can be difficult to remember which American Pie movie to watch first or how to watch them all sequentially. Despite the fact that the first four tales are interconnected, you can also view them as stand-alone films. The plots of each film are very diverse, despite the shared characters. Once you are familiar with the main players, it becomes quite simple to follow.
You can watch the complete movie series in a variety of ways. One: You can completely disregard the spin-offs and watch the four basic storylines as a unit. Alternatively, as the tales of the spin-offs are unrelated, you can watch each of them separately. The third choice is to see the complete series. However, you must watch it in order to do that.
We created a helpful guide that explains how to view each film in the American Pie series in chronological sequence and according to when it was released.

American Pie Movies in Chronological Order
There are four interconnected movies in the original series. Jim (Jason Biggs), Kevin Myers (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Chris “Oz” Ostreicher (Chris Klein), Paul Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), and Steve Stifler are the five friends they are following (Seann William Scott). The stories of the East Great Falls High School boys conclude with a wedding and a farewell reunion after many years. The boys find themselves on a series of amusing and outrageous sexual escapades from high school through their college years and even into their adult lives.
Teenagers and young adults in the 2000s regarded this original series as a revered classic because of the characters, who went on to become a massive pop cultural phenomenon not just in America but all around the world. The episodes in this series can be viewed in the following order, where each one leads into the next.
American Pie (1999)
American Pie, the first film in the series, helped establish a brand-new generation of high school comedies. Additionally, it is the first film in the series that must be seen before any others. Along with a few other new characters, this film introduces Jim, Kevin, Oz, Finch, Stifler, Jim’s father Noah (Eugene Levy), and Stifler’s mother (Jennifer Coolidge), who will stick around for the next three sequels.
The five high school buddies who make a vow to lose their virginity before they all graduate and leave for college are the subject of the movie American Pie. Stifler, on the other hand, asserts that he lost his virginity before his friends. To carry out their task, they decide to attend prom with their separate girlfriends. It results in a string of amusing and foolish errors as well as some unpleasant incidents.
Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Edie Kaye Thomas, Alyson Hannigan, Natasha Lyonne, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Seann William Scott, Tara Reid, Mena Suvari, Jennifer Coolidge, and Eugene Levy all have significant roles in the Paul Weitz-directed film American Pie.
American Pie 2 (2001)
American Pie 2 is the second film in the series and it follows the same pals on yet another trip while they are on summer vacation.
Since starting college a year ago, Jim, Kevin, Oz, Finch, and Stifler have been separated from their gang. In order to throw the best party of the year, they decide to get together over the summer holidays at a beach house they’ve rented in Michigan. However, as is to be anticipated from this group, the scheme backfires and they find themselves in difficulty.
James B. Rogers is the director of American Pie 2, which shares its core cast with the first.
American Wedding (2003)
Jim, Stifler, Kevin, and Finch return for the third episode of the series, along with Jim’s fiancée Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) and his father, Noah.
Since they started dating in high school, Jim and Michelle are about to tie the knot. However, Stifler is the main character of the tale, and despite all of his antics, he prepares an extravagant bachelor party for Jim. Things take a humorous turn as everyone—including Jim and Michelle’s friends and families—assembles for the big event.
Jesse Dylan’s film American Wedding also features Fred Willard and January Jones in pivotal roles.
Four spin-off films under the franchise were released between 2005 and 2009, between American Pie 2 and American Reunion, with the final film arriving in 2020. A few of the more experienced cast members are reprising their previous roles in these five films, which feature an entirely new cast and creative team. For the first four films, Eugene Levy plays Noah Levenstein in the same capacity. You can view the next five films in order, or you can watch any one of them separately.
American Pie Presents: Band Camp (2005)
The first film in the spin-off series, Matt (Tad Hilgenbrinck), the younger brother of Stifler, is the main character. After breaking out in a riot in high school, Matt is sent to a band camp for the summer. Things start to get interesting at the camp when he runs across his old sweetheart.
American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile (2006)
Another member of Stifler’s family, his cousin Erik, is featured in this film (John White). Erik intends to lose his virginity in a race where participants run naked, continuing the legacy of his infamous older relative.
American Pie Presents: Beta House (2007)
Erik is back in this tale, although he is now a college student. In this film, Dwight (Steve Talley), another cousin of Stifler’s, is also introduced. He is the leader of the fraternity where Erik also pledges and continues their antics. The cousins, however, are willing to go to any lengths, no matter how crazy, to protect their fraternity when a bunch of geeks attempts to shut down the frat house.
American Pie Presents: The Book of Love (2009)
The story of this film centres on three freshmen at East Great Falls High who stumble upon a worn-out sex manual that was produced by the students over the course of forty years. The three are seeking to lose their virginity when they find themselves in absurd scenarios with little knowledge and sex guidance.
American Reunion (2012)
The boys’ group reunites for the final time in the series’ concluding film, American Reunion. The plot takes place ten years after Jim and Michelle’s wedding, just as the movie’s debut does.
The plot centres on the five friends reuniting at their high school reunion and learning that their relationship endures despite their separation and passage of time. The boys attempt to recreate their high school years with one more hoorah, despite the fact that they are all grownups and responsible adults at this point. However, nothing has returned to how it was when they were in high school, and events take a strange turn.
The majority of the original cast members return for this fourth and final entry in the American Pie series, which was directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg.
American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rule (2020)
This ninth and most recent entry in the American Pie franchise shifts focus away from the males and their crazy sexual antics to a group of girls. Five pals gather in their senior year of high school at East Great Falls High to use their girl power and obtain what they want before they graduate.
