The fantasy action drama series “Carnivale Row” on Amazon Prime Video depicts a world in which human battles have destroyed the lands of the faes, causing them to flee their homeland and move to human towns where they must contend with prejudice, hatred, and persecution. In order to tell a complex, fantastical, and believable plot, the show weaves together numerous storylines in an intricate structure. Here is everything you need to know about the show’s setting if you have any questions.
Where Is Carnival Row Set?
In the universe of “Carnival Row,” magic, science, and mythological animals all coexist side by side. There are four continents in the world, as far as the citizens of the Republic of the Burgue are aware: Mesogea, Tirnanoc, Ignota, and Obscura. The home of humanity is Mesogea. One of the few non-human races discovered on this continent are the centaurs. The fae type are based in Timanoc (derogatory term: Critch). Anoun is one of the most well-known faerie kingdoms on the continent (other names for them include pix, locusts, and tink).
The troops of the Pact overcame the combined armies of The Burgue and Anoun during the conflict between Burgue and the latter. The nations of Idathach and Urisko, which are situated north of the Gulf of Anoun, are home to the fauns (a pejorative term: puck). On the southern tip of the Tirnanese Sea, in The Isles of Knock, live the kobolds.
Even less is known about Obscura than Ignota, a continent that is also comparatively obscure. West of the Gulf, in Ignota, the fauns have a nation called Puyan. Along with them, Ignota is also home to naga, raksha, and mouros. Since Obscura is unknown to humans, it is frequently left off of maps. On the other side of the Great Main ocean from Mesogea, Tirnanoc and Ignota are situated close by. Except for episode 3, which is set in Tirnanoc seven years before the present, the majority of the first season’s story takes place in The Burgue. We visit areas that the Pact rules over in season 2.
The Republic of The Burgue, a significant state on the northern coasts of Mesogea, was founded some 1,200 years ago by the nomadic Beorn tribe. The Beorn River runs alongside the city of The Burgue. Although late-Victorian London has had a significant cultural influence on the Burgue, the show’s writers used a variety of sources to create the city’s aesthetic.
Given that most of the filming took place in Prague, Czech Republic, a city with few instances of Victorian architecture, production designer François Séguin intended to give the imaginary city a distinctive appearance. “I made the decision to veer slightly to the side. If you can visualise it, it would be similar to Roman London. He reportedly told Architectural Digest that the Roman structures were in bad shape. It took a little effort at first to get everyone to forget that we weren’t in London and weren’t performing Frankenstein—something that’s quite different.
In episode 3, the two main characters, Rycroft “Philo” Philostrate (Orlando Bloom) and Vignette Stonemoss (Cara Delevingne), are transported to a snowy fairy kingdom in the Tirnanoc mountains where their romance begins seven years prior to the current situation. We first see the Pact, an alliance between the nations of Quivira and Cibola, in season 2. It is currently engaged in a civil war between the old traditional and aristocratic government and a radical socialist rebel group named New Dawn, which includes both human and non-human members.
