Early Life and Work
Don was born in Brandon on June 9, 1945, and has lived his entire life in the Riverdale RM. He attended Rivers Collegiate and Harrow School for his studies.
Don committed himself to farming after completing his degrees in Agriculture Extension AgriBusiness. He put in a lot of time growing both grains and cattle.
He looked into a variety of careers during the off-season, including Metal Industries, Somass Lumber Mill, and Heartland Livestock.
He has served in executive capacities for a number of institutions, including Keystone Agriculture Producers and the Brandon Co-Op Board.
Don’s dedication to civic engagement was demonstrated by his position as a Councillor for the R.M. of Daly.
Additionally, he took an active part in organisations like the Wannakumbac Circle, Canadian Ski Patrol-Manitoba, and the Zero-Till Association.
A Love for Camping and Travel
Don’s passion for camping grew while he was a camper at Camp Wannakumbac, where he created priceless experiences.
He was pleased with himself, his son Joel, and his grandson Colby attending the camp as three generations of his family.
Don’s love of discovery went beyond camping; he and his wife Denise developed a serious case of the travel bug. They set off on Farm Study Tours to places like South Africa and China.
They also loved living in an RV and travelling around Mexico, the USA, and Canada. Additionally, they travelled to South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, where they made enduring friendships.
A Creative Mind and Coaching
Don was incredibly creative. He devoted endless hours to repairing his father’s vintage model “M” tractor and creating other objects out of leftover metal at his workshop.
Don was able to bring his imagination to life because to his interest for tinkering and making.
In addition to having a passion for building things, he also coached for the Rivers Jets and put a lot of effort into helping the neighbourhood.
