If there is a fifth season of Sex Education, there will be even more big changes, since Maeve will be gone after season 4. Emma Mackey had already hinted that she was going to leave the Netflix show soon. She hinted that it might be time to “gracefully exit” the show while admitting that it’s hard to play a high schooler “stuck in time.”
We play 17-year-olds, but we’re all almost 30. It’s a little strange “”Total Film,” she said. “It’s a blessing because it’s a springboard, and it’s given us opportunities in different ways, but I want to leave it gracefully. I want to be happy that it exists, protect it, and enjoy it while it’s been around, but I think it’s time to leave it alone.”
Mackey won the BAFTA Rising Star Award on Sunday. She also told RadioTimes.com that she was done with Sex Education after she won, saying that she had already said goodbye to her character. It looks like Mackey’s time as Maeve is over.
When asked if she would return for a possible fifth season, Mackey said, “What’s next? Last week, I finished the fourth one.” No I don’t think I’ll be in season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.”
Other Sex Education Stars Are Leaving
There have also been other big stars leaving the show. Ncuti Gatwa will also be leaving Sex Education because he has been chosen to be the lead in Doctor Who. With that in mind, the news wasn’t too much of a shock, but it was another blow to Sex Education.
Before filming for Season 4, which just finished, some familiar faces had also left the show. Patricia Allison and Tanya Reynolds’ departures from their roles as Ola and Lily were announced last year. Reynolds said at the time that it makes sense for a show like this to have a lot of characters coming and going.
She said, “It’s just the way these shows go. When you have such big ensemble casts and so many characters, you have to let some of the older ones go to make room for the newer ones, which is the right thing to do and how it should be.”
The premiere date for Season 4 of Sex Education has not been set yet, but it is expected to come out in 2023.
