No more trips to fantasy island! Fox has officially canceled the drama series Fantasy Island after two seasons. The network made the announcement on Tuesday and thanked the cast and creators for their work.
Launched in 2021, Fantasy Island was the sequel to the 1980s ABC show of the same name. The series revolved around a luxury resort on an island where every fantasy requested by the guest is fulfilled. Along the way, the characters learned important life lessons.
Fox Cancels Fantasy Island After Two Seasons
Announcing the development, Fox released a statement on May 9th: “We were very pleased with Fantasy Island’s fun and escapist creative, which we had hoped would gain strong traction among viewers.”
“Sony Pictures Television is an important partner of ours, and we look forward to continuing to work with them on Accused, Alert: Missing Persons Unit, Doc, and the upcoming animated series Universal Basic Guys/Hoagie Bros.”
“We’d also like to thank Fantasy Island’s cast, led by Roselyn Sánchez, Kiara Barnes, and John Gabriel Rodriquez, crew and executive producers Liz Craft, Sarah Fain, and Anne Clements for their partnership on the series.”
The second season finale, which aired on May 8th has now served as the series finale as well. Fantasy Island has now become the latest show to be axed by Fox after Call Me Kat and 9-1-1, the latter of which will now be moving to ABC.
The Original Show Aired from 1977 to 1984
Fox’s Fantasy Island served as a sequel to the hit ABC show that went on from 1977 to 1984. The reboot followed Elena Roarke, a descendant of Mr. Roarke from the original show who invited guests to the magical island to fulfill their fantasies. However, things did not go as planned always, and the guests often left enlightened and transformed.
While the series has been canceled, creators had previously expressed their plans for season 3. Talking about how they would like to take the story forward in the third season, co-creator Liz Craft had said, “What we’d love to do in season 3 is dive a bit deeper into the mythology of the island and into what else is going on.”
“Now that everybody knows the island and knows some of the history, we could have a lot of fun with that. So along with the continued growth of our characters, that’s something we’re really excited about doing in season 3,” she had added.
Fantasy Island Starred Roselyn Sánchez in the Lead
The show starred Puerto Rican singer and actress Roselyn Sánchez as Elena Roarke, the grandniece of Mr. Roarke. The cast also included Kiara Barnes as Ruby Akuda, John Gabriel Rodriquez as Javier, Daniel Lugo as Segundo, Gabriela Z. Hernández as Dr. Gina, Alexa Mansour as Helene, and María Gabriela González as Isla.
Fantasy Island was created by Sarah Fain along with Craft. Both also served as the executive producers with Adam Kane and Anne Clements. The series was produced by Happier in Hollywood, Fox Entertainment, and Sony Pictures Television.
