On May 19, 1999, Hannah Hill vanished from her home in Akron, Ohio, and police made every effort to return her safely. But when the authorities discovered the dead body of the 18-year-old girl within the trunk of her car, the situation took a tragic and gloomy turn. The documentary “Dateline: The Night Hannah Hill Disappeared” tells the story of the horrific crime and the investigation that led to the conviction of the killer. How Did Hannah Hill Die?
In Akron, Ohio, Hannah Hill, a cheerful and affable young child, led a good existence with her parents. The 18-year-old had just received her high school diploma when she was killed, and her loved ones spoke of the lofty goals she had for the future. She also obtained employment as an ATM secretary for the summer while submitting her college applications because she didn’t want to be idle. Hannah was characterised as giving and friendly by the Hills’ neighbours and friends, and the show made notice of her relationship with Brad O’Born.
It’s interesting to note that Hannah and Brad had an on-again, off-again relationship, and the show even implied that Brad acted very violently. There was nothing unusual, though, and nobody was aware of the tragedy that would occur later. On May 19, 1999, at around 10:30 p.m., Hannah Hill left her home with the assurance that she would be back shortly. However, the 18-year-old never returned that evening, and her manager called her family the following morning to inform them that Hannah did not arrive at work on time.
Hannah’s family quickly raised the alarm before reporting her missing to the police because it was so wildly out of character for her. They even teamed up with neighbourhood volunteers to search the surrounding locations, but to no avail. As soon as the police took control of the inquiry, they organised a number of search parties and even made use of all facilities on hand. With each hour that passed without any updates on the missing girl, her family started to fear the worst.
Around this time, authorities also learned of a vehicle being parked improperly; nevertheless, they chose to only issue a parking ticket to that vehicle. However, further investigation revealed that Hannah owned the vehicle, and when police investigators opened the trunk, they discovered the 18-year-old dead and partially undressed. After that, a medical evaluation revealed that Hannah had died on the night of her disappearance, and an autopsy revealed that she had been murdered by being battered and strangled.
The initial investigation into Hannah Hill’s murder was difficult because there were no witnesses or clues for the police to pursue. However, after speaking with a few of Hannah’s friends, the police discovered that she and her boyfriend, Brad, had a fight the night before Hannah vanished. Curiously, the police discovered numerous scratch scars on Brad’s arms when they went to question him. Brad, however, maintained on his innocence and claimed that they had only argued briefly before Hannah rushed out. Meanwhile, the police started looking into Hannah’s phone records and found that she was frequently in touch with Denny Ross.
Denny and Hannah had spoken on the phone multiple times in the hours before Hannah passed away, and the police wondered if he was the last person to see her alive. The show also implied that Denny was a notorious drug dealer, which raised further questions about his role. In response to questions, Denny acknowledged meeting Hannah a few hours prior to her passing and even claimed they shared a kiss. He insisted, though, that the 18-year-old leave his flat at 1:30 in the morning, when she was still sober.
The police were unable to trust Denny’s account, so they were able to obtain a search warrant before interrogating him once more. This time, police also found Hannah’s pants in a garbage bag from Denny’s flat. Denny was detained for murder as a result of the evidence that connected him to the crime. It’s interesting to note that Denny’s first trial ended in a mistrial due to an issue with one of the jurors. But while he was out on bail awaiting his retrial, he attacked and sexually molested Jennifer Tittle, a 32-year-old woman. He was found guilty of attempted murder, rape, kidnapping, and criminal assault and given a 25–life sentence in 2004 as a result.
Due to Jennifer’s miraculous recovery, she was able to testify against Denny in the murder trial for Hannah, and the prosecution also had access to DNA evidence connecting the suspect to the crime. As a result, he was found guilty of murder, mistreatment of a corpse, and tampering with evidence in 2012, and was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison as well as an extra 4-year term. Denny is still incarcerated at the NorthEast Ohio Correctional Centre in Youngstown, Ohio, with a projected release date of 2048. Parole is no longer an option.
