Storytelling is a crucial skill. In actuality, it is a duty. The world learns about a variety of topics through stories, from the depths of human emotions to the problems that beset society. Thus, it becomes even more crucial to tell the histories of the minority groups in our society. Put them at the centre of your narrative and provide a glimpse into their genuine life for the world to see. For this reason, diversity is vital while creating character sketches as well as when selecting actors. Less frequently than not, members of the LGBTQ+ community must settle for supporting roles in comedic works. But as things change, more and more Gay characters are appearing in a variety of storylines. Following that, the following is a list of the best LGBTQ shows currently streaming on Netflix:
Dear White People (2017–)
‘Dear White People,’ a television series created by Justin Simien, was based on his own 2014 film of the same name. The show tackles topics like racism, classism, gender identity, and sexuality with an unorthodox flamboyance that is both proudly contentious and self-aware. A groundbreaking piece in terms of the representation of the black LGBTQ+ community is “Dear White People.” It directly opposes the caricature that Hollywood has worked to create on the subject by showcasing the diversity of black queerness.
Eastsiders (2012 -)
The Los Angeles-based television series “Eastsiders” centres on a gay couple attempting to improve the dynamics of their relationship. Four years have passed since Cal and Thom started dating, but things get tough when Cal learns that Thom has been having an extramarital affair. He is enraged and broken, but he chooses against leaving Thom since he loves him too much for that. Instead, he determines that revenge is due. They end themselves on a very tough path as a result of numerous affairs with non-Muslims and their unrestricted drug use. In addition to them, Cal’s best buddy Kathy occasionally makes headlines.
Elite (2018 –)
The Spanish series “Elite” has managed to stand out with its daring approach to expressing sexuality and willingness to reveal the other side of what is traditional despite the clear oversaturation of Netflix teen dramas. The cast of the show is rather large. Three teens from low-income households, Samuel (Itzan Escamilla), Nadia (Mina El Hammani), and Christian (Miguel Herrán), are the subject of the film’s first focus. It follows their experiences as they transition to a renowned boarding school. The relationship between Omar (Omar Ayuso) and Ander (Arón Piper) is one of the most well-liked ones on the show. Together, the two characters set off on an amazing trip that ultimately results in perfect acceptance of their sexuality.
Everything Sucks! (2018)
If the tagline of your life’s tale is the same as the title of this show, you should visit Netflix’s comedy department. There are numerous hilarious comedies that can brighten your day, including “Everything Sucks!” ‘s among them. The story of this episode is set in the little Oregon town of Boring. Two social outcasts who attempt to do something unconventional, such as filming a movie about their school, are at its core. This serves as the foundation for additional difficulties in love and other areas of life. One of the boys develops feelings for Kate, the principal’s daughter. She is a fantastic character because she allows us to see someone who is examining their sexuality and considering all of their possibilities before deciding on anything.
Feel Good (2020 – 2021)
The semi-autobiographical romantic comedy “Feel Good” starring Mae Martin, Charlotte Ritchie, Lisa Kudrow, and Adrian Lukis is produced by Mae Martin and Joe Hampson. The comedian Mae Martin, whose life is the focus of the show, battles addiction on a daily basis. She has done well to fight back and organise her life, but when she meets George, things take an unexpected turn. The two soon begin dating, but as Mae watches helplessly, she becomes aware that her life is once again spiralling out of control.
Grace and Frankie (2015-)
“Grace and Frankie,” which is set in San Diego, chronicles the tale of two very dissimilar women. A cosmetics tycoon who has fought her way to the top of her field is Grace (Jane Fonda). She can be very brutal, is pragmatist, and has a dry sense of humour. Frankie (Lily Tomlin), on the other hand, is an artist with a modest and generous nature. As Robert (Martin Sheen) and Sol (Sam Waterston), the husbands of these two ladies, confess their love for one another, the two women get the shock of their lives. Grace and Frankie learn they have no choice but to live together as their former spouses find happiness together. Grace and Frankie begin to relearn all the pleasures of life as the story goes on and their friendship develops.
Gypsy (2017)
In the movie “Gypsy,” Naomi Watts plays Jean Holloway, a psychiatrist. She is married and has a child, but she wants to do something adventurous to escape the routine she has become enmeshed in. She starts to get fantastic ideas for stories from her patients and decides to go above and above in her work. Under a false identity, she starts to luxuriate in their lives. When she falls for the ex-girlfriend of one of her patients, her life becomes a little bit too exciting.
House of Cards (2013 – 2018)
‘House of Cards’ on Netflix got off to a great start. Even one of its most well-liked shows was on it. Nevertheless, after the Kevin Spacey story broke, things quickly became worse for the programme as well. If you can get past its controversies, “House of Cards” is still a really great programme. Politics dominate, with a few modest forays into other topics. The portrayal of Frank Underwood as a bisexual guy was one of the show’s many audacious choices. This programme might not be the best because the narrative didn’t really elaborate on that possibility. Even so, it is one of a very few number of films to have a starring LGBTQ+ character.
One Day at a Time (2017-2019)
One Day at a Time, one of Netflix’s most lauded and well-liked sitcoms, was unexpectedly cancelled this year. It chronicles the daily challenges of a Cuban-American family. Penelope is at the heart of the narrative. She is a nurse who served in the military and, after divorcing her husband, tries to raise her children with the assistance of her mother. While this programme incorporates many different issues into its plot, homosexuality is one of the most prominent ones. Elena, a teenager who learns she is a lesbian, is Penelope’s daughter. Her tale illustrates the difficulties LGBTQ+ people have in finding social acceptance.
Orange Is the New Black (2013 – 2019)
One of the most well-liked Netflix series is “Orange Is the New Black,” which is based on the memoirs of Piper Kerman. You should finish all the seasons before the final one debuts because the show’s run will end this year. Piper Chapman, the protagonist of this tale, is a lady who was found guilty of transporting drugs over ten years ago. Piper, who had been living a peaceful life with her family and fiancé, was sent to a minimum-security facility where she made time for self-reflection and formed new bonds with the other inmates.
Queer Eye (2018 – )
Every now and then, everyone requires a break from life. A makeover is also a fantastic method to introduce something new, shake things up a bit, and keep things interesting. Most people, however, lack the time to tap into that side of themselves and end up leading depressed lives. The Fab Five were reinstated specifically to assist people in making this type of life shift. Every episode includes a nominee. This person might want assistance with anything, such as getting ready for a date or building their confidence for upcoming interviews. You won’t be the same person once the Fab Five have through with you.
Ratched (2020-)
In their film “Ratched,” Evan Romansky and Ryan Murphy give the origin to Nurse Ratched, one of cinema’s most recognisable villains. The character was conceived by Ken Kesey for his 1962 book “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” which was adapted for the screen by Czech-American director Milo Forman in 1975. Louise Fletcher played Nurse Mildred Ratched in the movie, which won an Oscar. Murphy and Romansky created a psychological thriller drama series that is as distant from the original as it could have been by setting their version in the late 1940s. It’s stuffed to the gills with shocking situations, self-awareness, and complete craziness, just like normal Ryan Murphy entertainment.
The series’ central plot is around the romance between Ratched (Sarah Paulson), the press secretary for the governor of California, and Gwendolyn Briggs (Cynthia Nixon). The tragedy of the show is partially derived from the audience’s knowledge of what these characters’ foreseeable futures entail. ‘Ratched’ doesn’t always address the problems that the LGBTQ+ community’s modern members were dealing with. Rather, it creates a near-utopian universe around its main character and her love partner and provides them with a brief happy ending at the end of season 1.
Sense8 (2015 – 2018)
In “Sense8,” a group of individuals learn that they are psychologically and emotionally connected to one another. They are able to communicate everything they know thanks to this link. They are unsure of the origin of this power, though. The use of all of the key characters in the programme is commended for adding some diversity to the cast. It leverages their plots to highlight the issues in many regions and communities throughout the world by setting them in various locations. Nomi Marks is one of the eight “sensates,” as they come to refer to themselves. Hacktivist and transgender person named Nomi resides in San Francisco. She is portrayed as a powerful, resolute character who is sure to quickly win your heart.
Sex Education (2019 -)
This year’s Netflix romance comedy “Sex Education” made its debut and quickly gained popularity. While the majority of its attention is directed towards the young girls’ sexual lives, the LGBTQ+ community is also represented, and it does so brutally effectively. Eric, who is portrayed as a black gay youngster from a religious home, is portrayed as Otis’s closest buddy. Eric experiences an extremely trying period and battles with accepting his identity the entire season. His character experiences a significant growth arc, and, I’m happy to report, the season closes on a good one for him. No of their sexual orientation, everyone may benefit from Eric’s fantastic character, which is possibly the best in the entire series.
Special (2019 – 2021)
The semi-autobiographical comedy-drama series “Special” stars talented actors Ryan O’Connell, Jessica Hecht, Punam Patel, and Marla Mindelle. It is based on O’Connell’s memoir “I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves” and follows Ryan, a young man who struggles with cerebral palsy after an accident, which causes his entire life to essentially come to a stop. Rays realises that he must take something to improve his current situation because he is tired of simply being a victim of an awful event. As a result, he starts pursuing his true ambitions in life. Although initially things don’t go his way, he eventually finds comfort in the idea that he is trying.
Super Drags (2018)
A Brazilian adult animated comedy called “Super Drags” tells the tale of three drag queen superheroes who have just one task: defending LGBT people. The main antagonist is a wicked queen who devises a variety of diabolical schemes to get the superheroes to concede defeat. But the Super Drags always manage to vanquish her with the aid of and support from one another. The show makes fun of society’s attitude towards the LGBT population and how individuals must tap into their inner superhero to deal with the daily abuse they endure from society.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
The Haunting of Bly Manor, the second installment in the “The Haunting” series, is a slow-burning horror that grows increasingly ominous thanks to a terrible atmosphere and eerie events. Yet, the series is ultimately a love story, as one of the characters notes in the series finale. Victoria Pedretti plays American governess Danielle “Dani” Clayton, who travels to the Bly Manor to take care of Lord Henry Wingrave’s recently orphaned niece and nephew (Henry Thomas). She meets Jaime, the property’s gardener, there (Amelia Eve), and with her assistance, she eventually overcomes her awful background.
The relationship between Dani and Jamie gives the show an essential layer of complexity. The Turn of the Screw, a famous novella by Henry James published in 1898, served as the basis for the script that showrunner Mike Flanagan (‘Gerald’s Game’) created. The screenplay not only updates the original tale but also makes several improvements.
Trinkets (2019-2020)
Three very different young girls, Elodie (Brianna Hildebrand), Moe (Mackenzie Lenton), and Tabitha (Quintessa Swindell), are all kleptomaniacs in “Trinkets,” the web version of Kirsten Smith’s 2013 novel of the same name. They meet at a meeting of Shoplifters Anonymous, and they later decide to keep their acquaintance somewhat under wraps. Elodie is one of the three main characters who is gay. The series’ central plot revolves around her friendship with Sabine, a musician played by Katrina Cunningham.
While not being among the highest-rated teen dramas on Netflix in recent years, “Trinkets” is still a well-produced, brief-lived series with an engaging plot and nuanced characters. It addresses several social topics without being overly didactic. The lack of a main star in the cast of “Trinkets” is beneficial since it gives each of the three characters their own time to shine. The most well-known actor in that ensemble is Hildebrand. In the “Deadpool” movies, she played Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015-2019)
A masterpiece like ’30 Rock,’ a satirical sitcom about the workings of network television, was previously created by the partnership of comedic geniuses Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. The Netflix sitcom “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” which tells the tale of Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper), who was kidnapped from her family when she was in the eighth grade by the leader of a doomsday cult, Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm), and kept at an underground bunker for 15 years with three other women, almost effortlessly incorporated that distinctive brand of humour. When they are finally set free, Kimmy decides to settle in New York City.
Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess), her flatmate, is pompous and exaggeratedly amusing. Titus, a failing actor, fled his house on the day of his marriage to his childhood friend Vonda Jeanne Brooks (Pernell Walker). ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ masterfully blends the humour with deeper, tragic moments, most of which may be viewed as the result of Burgess’ amazing performance. After coming in New York, he formally came out of the closet and embraced who he truly was.
Wynonna Earp (2016 – present)
When discussing fierce sidekicks, Waverly Earp immediately springs to mind. She is the main character, half-sister to Wynonna, and an authority on the origins of their last name. She actually excels at just about everything! The Earp sisters’ attempts to let what is dead be dead are followed in the show, with Wynonna serving as the main character. In order to carry out their responsibilities, the Earp sisters team up with a government black-ops section, embracing their legacy as the world’s protector from supernatural threats. Waverly and Nicole, the town’s constable, had a hot first date and later developed into a relationship that the entire fandom had been shipping.
