“The Reading,” which was directed by Courtney Glaude, is about Emma Leeden, a home invasion survivor who writes a book about the event that led to the deaths of her whole family. In her book called “Invasion,” she goes into great detail about that terrible day. She finds out that a reading from Sky Brown, a 19-year-old psychic medium, could be a great way to get the word out about her business. So, Emma agrees to a session so that her book can get more attention. But Sky isn’t a fake. The young girl actually calls a bad power from a different portal, and that’s when the tragedy starts.
The story of the scary thriller that gives you goosebumps is about a home invasion and turning to supernatural things after losing someone. If you liked how scary the movie was and want to see more like it, here’s a list of movies you can count on. Most of these movies are like “The Reading,” and you can watch them on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu.
Don’t Breathe (2016)
Fede Alvarez’s crime thriller “Don’t Breathe” follows the lives of three thieves who want to break into the home of a blind man. Even though he used to be a soldier, he seems like an easy person to ignore. Soon, the three of them realise that the old man is not a normal person and should not be messed with. After one of them dies, he traps them in the house while he looks for them. In this movie, unlike in “The Reading,” the people who break in are the ones who are being hunted.
Funny Games (2007)
Michael Haneke wrote and directed the crime thriller “Funny Games,” which is about a family who spends time at their lake house. Peter and Paul are two liars who trick people with their sweet smiles and then take them hostage for their sadistic pleasures. The two then start to hurt and humiliate the family by torturing, making fun of, and making fun of them. The family in “Funny Games” also becomes a victim of the sick fantasies of the intruders, just like Emma’s husband and children. This shows how traumatic the experience could be.
Hereditary (2018)
After Annie’s mentally ill mother dies, she and her family become interested in strange and sad things that keep happening. The strange things her daughter does set off a chain of events that put everyone’s life in danger. After another loss, the family points fingers at each other. Annie’s desperation leads to their downfall when she tries to call her loved ones back to her. This opens the door to demons, cults, possessions, and other scary things.
Ari Aster is in charge of the psychological horror film “Hereditary.” He does a great job of combining mythology with family patterns and trauma. Like in “The Reading,” Annie asks a psychic medium to talk to a loved one who has died, but she ends up opening a door to terrible things.
Hush (2016)
Mike Flanagan directed and co-wrote the scary thriller “Hush.” It gives you the creeps. The story starts when a writer who lives in the woods and is deaf and mute starts to notice strange things happening around her. She plans to live a quiet life until a killer in a mask starts following her. Since no one is around to help her right away, the girl has to figure out how to keep him away until help arrives. Even though there are no supernatural events in ‘Hush,’ it has the same heart-stopping, spine-chilling scenes as ‘The Reading.’
The Intruder (2019)
Scott and Annie are looking at a piece of land in Napa Valley when they see a man killing a deer. After the couple moves into their new home, Charlie, the previous owner, starts to keep a close eye on them. Scott gets annoyed by Charlie’s constant presence, but Annie is kind to him because he just lost his wife. As Charlie’s love for Annie grows stronger, he tries to kill Scott.
Scott and Annie don’t give up, so they fight back and find out a scary secret about Charlie’s past. The horror thriller “The Intruder,” directed by Deon Taylor, is similar to Emma’s story in “The Reading.” This movie is about a violent and obsessive man who is ready to commit a hate crime against innocent people at the drop of a hat.
The Strangers (2008)
Bryan Bertino wrote and directed the horror thriller “The Strangers,” which is about a young couple who lives in a remote home. When they get home from a wedding reception, they’ve been tired for hours and fall asleep. But someone knocks on their door at midnight. Soon, three intruders break into the house and don’t say what they want. The movie is based on a true story, and like “The Reading,” it shows how a person’s life can be in danger in their own home, which is supposed to be a safe place.
Us (2019)
Adelaide Wilson and her family go on vacation to the beach where she used to play as a child. For her, it’s a trip down memory lane. But she notices that something bad is watching her family from afar. Before she could figure out what the strange feeling meant, the mysterious strangers broke into their house and took everyone hostage.
Soon, the family notices a creepy resemblance and figures out that each of the attackers is a copy of them. “Us” is a mystery/horror movie written and directed by Jordan Peele. Like “The Reading,” “Us” is about supernatural forces breaking into a home.
You’re Next (2011)
Aubrey and Paul Davidson come from wealthy families and are part of the elite, but their relationship is in trouble. They are tired of doing the same things over and over again, so they decide to fix their family ties by planning a wedding anniversary party. The couple’s children and spouses join the party, which turns into chaos when people with crossbows and masks attack and arrest them.
The best way for the family to stay alive is to huddle together. Adam Wingard’s horror thriller “You’re Next” is about how unknown and dangerous forces take over a peaceful meeting with good intentions, like the one in “The Reading.”
