One of the most difficult obstacles you may face when browsing any streaming service is just trying to sort through the seemingly limitless array of options. When you have so many options and are unaware of any platform updates, it might be challenging to identify what might be excellent. However, you need not worry because we have you covered for all Shudder originals as well as planned releases.
A number of these movies have already been released for February, but there are still a few more that might be intriguing for the streaming service focused on horror. A selection of the most intriguing films from February’s newest releases is provided in the list below.
Last and First Men (Feb. 6)
You must undoubtedly approach this one with an open mind. It isn’t really suspenseful or thrilling. In reality, it’s a number of still photos that have been stitched together with Tilda Swinton, of all people, narrating some 16mm black and white film. There’s no way you enter 2001: A Space Odyssey expecting there to be explosions or a fast-moving plot. Although it won’t get you excited, you might want to treat yourself to something before watching this movie. Imagine yourself as a five-year-old again, pleading to see the picture book that your mother is reading since it’s kind of like an audiobook with pictures.
Jóhann Jóhannsson, an Icelandic native who has worked on a number of soundtracks that make you wonder, “He did the music for that?” actually directed the movie. Sicario, Mandy, The Theory of Everything, and Blade Runner 2049 originally are on the short list. What’s more cooler about this movie is that he actually conducted the score live with the BBC Orchestra when it debuted in 2017. He was a talented musician who consistently put out intriguing solo albums from 2002 till his passing in 2018. His sole film under his direction was this one.
My Bloody Valentine 3D (Feb. 1)
You should be prepared for this one because the title contains 3D. What you can expect is a 2009 non-3D remake of the 1981 masterpiece of the same name. It was artistically released during that anything-goes horror period of January and February, together with all the other horror remakes of the time. On a Friday night with your pals and perhaps a few beers, you really can’t do much better than a slasher movie replete with a silly 3D gimmick. It won’t wow anyone.
Nekromantik 1 and Nekromantik 2 (Feb. 13)
Is controversy a word? These two films rank with Cannibal Holocaust and A Serbian Film. More for a dare than for entertainment, watch this one. The main concept is that a man brings a corpse home from work, and his wife begins spending an excessive amount of time with it in the bedroom. In fact, there is genuine eyeball licking of the body in the film. You can either stay or go at this point, but be aware that the movie degenerates even further from this point on and has a similarly filthy and unpleasant vibe to something like The Last House on the Left (1972) The first film is billed as A Night of the Loving Dead, while the second one continues the theme in case you still haven’t had enough.
Nomads (Feb. 20)
Did you know that Pierce Brosnan starred in a shoestring horror film once? Now you have. In one of his first leading performances, the James Bond actor played a French anthropologist who was looking into a bunch of street punks who appeared to be innocent. Though the plot darkens over time as it becomes possible that they are a demonic cult. Surprise! Additionally, the story is interestingly portrayed through Brosnan’s memories rather than as things actually happen in the movie.
Although the plot is based on the evil street gangs of Los Angeles, the film is purely 1980s. Additionally, Predator and Die Hard director John McTiernan is behind the camera. This should be a good viewing if those movies are any indication of the quality to be had. Even though it might not be the most frightful movie you’ll watch all year, it might be one of the strangest or more intriguing ones that airs on television.
Queen of Spades (Feb. 1)
Why would I want to watch a strange black-and-white film from 1948, you might be asking. Check out the Queen of Spades trailer to see how crazy this one looks. Full of yells about selling your soul to the devil, which sounds like fun, and shouting people. An army captain who has a serious gambling problem is the protagonist of the novel. Before you know it, his apartment is being visited by the ghosts of former gamblers. When you settle down to watch a spooky movie, you might not necessarily desire spooky but rather just bizarre. This one appears to be exactly that.
Skinamarink (Feb. 2)
This month, the low-budget movie that is sweeping the community will be available on Shudder. In Skinamarink, two young children are left waiting for their parents in a shifting home, afraid of what would happen next. The movie went popular online after having its world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival. Horror aficionados can view it on the streaming service after it has shown in theatres.
