What Exact Is Rex Manning Day Celebrated For? Empire Records’ Legacy Explained

  • DCS

The 1990s cult classic movie “Empire Records” may have celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2020, but fans still find a way to pay tribute to it each year. The movie, which was not well-liked by reviewers (according to Rotten Tomatoes) or financially successful upon its initial release (according to BoxOfficeMojo), has since developed quite a legacy among moviegoers. Liv Tyler and RenĂ©e Zellweger are just two of the cast members who went on to have successful careers after the movie’s premiere. The movie has also developed a devoted following over time, as shown by its remarkable 83 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The 1995 film follows a group of record store workers as they grow up and discover new methods to get along with one another throughout the course of a single day. Of course, the movie doesn’t just happen on any day; it happens on what the staff at the store refer to as “Rex Manning Day.” Rex Manning Day is still observed on April 8 every year by “Empire Records” fans more than 25 years after the movie’s debut.

Even Rex Manning is surprised by Empire Records’ legacy

Maxwell Caulfield plays Rex Manning in “Empire Records,” a 1980s pop sensation who has fallen out of favour but is slated to appear at the movie’s titular record shop to sign autographs for his upcoming album. As a result, everyone working at the shop starts calling the occasion “Rex Manning Day.” Of course, none of the characters realise that during the course of the tale in the movie, the occurrence will truly compel them to face some painful truths about themselves.

On social media, “Empire Records” supporters have started commemorating the movie’s setting date of April 8 by observing Rex Manning Day. In addition to uniting “Empire Records” fans, this custom has also warmed the hearts of Caulfield and the other cast members.

The “Empire Records” star said, “It’s dubbed “Rex Manning Day,” but it could as well be called “Empire Records Day,” in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in April 2021 about the Rex Manning Day celebrations that appear on social media every year. The actor continued by admitting that because of how the movie was initially received, he didn’t pay attention to the movie’s expanding legacy for many years. It originally eluded me, and I didn’t give it the weight it has gained over time, according to Caulfield. The actor went on to say that “Empire Records” “stands up” even today and that making it was “a beautiful experience.”

What he believes might have occurred to his narcissistic personality following the events of “Empire Records, I believe he would currently serve as a judge on “American Idol,” Caulfield said to THR. He hadn’t given up, in my opinion. He really was a trooper.”
