The movie industry is full of numerous works in numerous genres that gain popularity on a yearly basis based on new releases and consumer desire. Everybody’s preferences can be met by movies, which can also precisely suit any mood we are in. Romantic comedies have managed to maintain their stability and attractiveness for many years among all the film genres, while not being the most popular.
One could argue that, among all genres, rom-coms are by far the most predictable. We typically know that, despite the challenges the story presents, love will triumph, and that, throughout the film, we will undoubtedly notice several clichés and scenes that have been reused time and time again in numerous productions starring different actors. Nevertheless, and in spite of all, one falls head over heels in love with these tales.
As opposed to other genres, while rom-coms can sometimes contribute something new, rom-coms’ beauty lies in how they make the viewer feel. Many of us like stumbling onto these tales of ordinary individuals going about their daily lives until love intervenes and completely transforms them. We remain enthused because romantic comedies convey the idea that anyone of us may be the star of a charming love story. To top it all off, these films provide a stress-free and seamless experience because of their complex yet accessible plots. There is a vast variety of rom-coms to watch on streaming services, including both older films and more recent releases. Here are a few of the top ones that are available on Amazon Video.
About Time
Richard Curtis’ 2013 romantic comedy About Time, starring Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson, was released. Tim, a young guy who learns he can travel across time, is the subject of this play. In order to reach a brighter future and have luck in love, he begins going back in time and altering specific events. He meets Mary out of the blue, and they instantly click. However, Tim accidentally erases their first date after one of his excursions through time.
He uses time travel to try to undo his mistakes in an effort to win back his love, but soon learns that this might not be the best strategy. Bill Nighy, Tom Hollander, Lindsay Duncan, and Margot Robbie also appear in the movie About Time alongside McAdams and Domhnall.
Blended
After starring in The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have established themselves as reliable rom-com partners. Their third collaboration is Blended. Jim and Lauren, a widower and a divorcee, go on a blind date that goes horribly wrong and in which there is absolutely no chemistry in this 2014 Frank Coraci movie.
After deciding they would never see each other again, the two go about living their lives until they are given the chance to take their children on an all-inclusive, lavish trip to Africa, where they are unaware that they will be staying together. The cast also includes Bella Thorne, Terry Crews, Kevin Nealon, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Joel McHale in addition to Sandler and Drew Barrymore.
Bride Wars
In the romantic comedy Bride Wars, two couples are examined, as well as their close and intricate friendship. Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson are the main actors in this Gary Winick-directed movie from 2009, and Chris Pratt, Steve Howey, Bryan Greenberg, and Candice Bergen also make appearances. It centres on Emma and Liv, two young ladies who have known each other since they were children and share a love of weddings. The two spent their entire lives picturing and preparing every aspect of their upcoming weddings.
When both of them receive proposals from their partners, they set out to carry out their plans and reserve the venue of their dreams. However, a mix-up results in both weddings being scheduled for the same date, turning these friends into fierce rivals who are prepared to do whatever it takes to ruin the other’s celebration. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Bride Wars was well received by audiences and became a worldwide box office success.
Hope Springs
Hope Springs was a critical success, which should come as no surprise given the cast’s star power, which includes Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, and Steve Carell. David Frankel, who previously collaborated with Streep on one of her best movies, The Devil Wears Prada, directed this movie in 2012.
Hope Springs centres on Kay and Arnold, a couple who have been married for more than thirty years but who, despite being steadfast and steady, have lost their spark. Kay is determined to make things better and proposes they sign up for a week-long seminar with famous Dr. Bernie Feld where they would have to face their emotions and decide if they want to remain together or call it quits.
Legally Blonde
The final romantic comedy on my list is Legally Blonde, the 2001 hit that made Reese Witherspoon a household name. The film, which was directed by Robert Luketic and was based on the same-titled novel by Amanda Brown, stars Elle Woods, a sorority girl who appears to have everything she wants until her boyfriend Warner dumps her because she isn’t being serious enough. She embarks on her life’s most difficult endeavor—studying at Harvard Law School—determined to win his affection back and demonstrate her value.
Elle has no idea that while travelling she will uncover a new aspect to her life that defies expectations and meet a new lover. In this well-known production, Witherspoon is joined by Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis, Victor Garber, and Jennifer Coolidge.
Marry Me
The wedding of Kat and Bastian, two famous musicians, will be aired throughout the world. But just before their public wedding ceremony, she learns that her fiance has been unfaithful to her. Heartbroken, Kat decides to marry one of the other guests at the celebration, a move that she never would have imagined would have such a profound impact on both of their lives.
Marry Me, a 2018 movie starring Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, and Maluma and based on a graphic novel by Bobby Crosby, was directed by Kat Coiro.
Somebody I Used to Know
Somebody I Used to Know is a brand-new production that made its Prime Video debut in February of last year. This is Dave Franco’s second full-length movie, and he also wrote the script alongside his wife, the starring actress Alison Brie. It centres on Ally, a prominent TV producer who has devoted the previous several years of her life entirely to her career. Ally chooses to see her mother in her hometown after her show is abruptly cancelled, leaving her feeling defeated.
Sean, her ex-boyfriend, reconnects with her on this vacation, bringing back old emotions and making her question the kind of person she has become. This is made worse when she meets his fiancée, a lady who strongly resembles the person she was when she was younger. Jay Ellis, Kiersey Clemons, Danny Pudi, Olga Merediz, and Haley Joel Osment co-star with Brie in this romantic comedy.
The Girl Next Door
The top student at his school, Matthew has spent the last few years working hard to ensure a successful academic future. When he meets Danielle, a young woman who moves in next door and with whom he begins flirting, his life changes drastically. But, things get complicated when Matthew learns that his new crush is also a well-known porn star.
That is the premise of Luke Greenfield’s romantic comedy The Girl Next Door, a rom-com that has gained cult status over the years. This 2004 production stars Paul Dano, Timothy Olyphant, James Remar, Chris Marquette, and Olivia Wilde in addition to Emile Hirsch and Elisha Cuthbert.
The Hating Game
The Hating Game is just another example of a pair that flawlessly transitioned from hating one other to falling in love throughout the history of cinema. In this 2021 movie, Josh and Lucy, two opposing businessmen, are obliged to collaborate after their companies merge. They not only despise one another, but they also vie for the same job. Yet as they spend more time together, they rapidly realise that despite their shared antipathy, they might actually be holding quite different emotions.
This Peter Hutchings romantic comedy, which is based on the 2016 book by Sally Thorne, stars Lucy Hale, Austin Stowell, Damon Daunno, Nicholas Baroudi, and Corbin Bernsen.
Your Christmas or Mine?
An original Christmas romance comedy from Prime Video is titled “Your Christmas or Mine.” It had its world premiere in December 2022 under Jim O’Hanlon’s direction. This show, which stars Asa Butterfield and Cora Kirk, centres on Hayley and James, two college students who are just beginning an exciting affair. When Christmas draws near, the two part ways at the railway station to return home to their different families, but on the way they impulsively decide to switch trains to surprise one another, utterly mixing up their futures in the process.
As a result, Hayley finds herself at James’ opulent family residence with James and his large extended family. The relationship is also a secret to neither family, which reveals some unexpected secrets.
