There is a need to find something romantic to watch when Valentine’s Day approaches, whether it is on the actual holiday or in the lead-up to it. Finding the appropriate movie to watch may be challenging, and while going on a date to the cinema is always an option, there is an undeniable allure to staying in and watching a movie at home. With so many streaming services to choose from, Hulu has distinguished itself by offering a large range of films from different studios.
There are several excellent movies available to Hulu customers that include romances in a range of moods and topic matters. Love stories with individuals ranging in age from 17 to 80, happy endings, tragic endings, or bittersweet endings that are set in various historical eras. In light of this, here are the top romantic films currently available on Hulu for Valentine’s Day 2023.
Amour
Another terrible love story is Amour Amour, but it’s one you should watch. Amour, a Best Picture candidate for the Academy Awards, centers on the dying days of a senior French married couple and two retired music teachers. The husband and wife struggle with their final moments as a couple after the wife suffers a stroke and needs assistance from her husband.
Amour is a heartbreaking love story that explores the responsibilities of a romance but still allowing two people who are really in love to remain together until the very end. Make sure you have some tissues on hand before viewing Amour.
Crush
A teen girl who joins the track team to get closer to her crush instead starts to feel things for her crush’s sister in the 2022 Hulu original Crush Crush. The teen rom-com Crush offers a welcome update that feels appropriate for a modern audience and depicts sexuality as a spectrum that is simply a regular aspect of life. It has an impressive young cast of performers who are headed for stardom. Crush was one of the top Hulu originals that debuted in 2022, and it’s worth watching on February 14th.
If Beale Street Could Talk
Despite being a more tragic relationship, If Beale Street Could Talk is still a powerful film that you should watch. If Beale Street Could Talk, the follow-up movie to Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning Moonlight, depicts the tale of a young lady who tries to clear her boyfriend’s name and establish his innocence prior to the birth of their kid.
A tragic love story with personal details, If Beale Street Could Talk has regrettably only become more current over time. Not every relationship has a conventionally happy ending, but even a more somber, realistic conclusion doesn’t preclude the presence of an extraordinarily moving love story.
Love, Simon
Love, Simon is both a romantic comedy and a coming-of-age narrative for LGBTQ+ people. The film, which is centered on the title character Simon, chronicles his efforts to come out to his friends and family as gay while simultaneously attempting to identify the student in his class who may be the prospective love interest he has been speaking to. The movie ends with a traditional romantic comedy gesture that uplifts the viewer’s mood and brings back memories of first love for all audiences, regardless of sexual orientation.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
The passionate relationship between an aristocrat and the artist hired to paint her portrait is the subject of the novel Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which is set in France in the late 18th century. The 2019 movie was almost universally praised upon release, and in 2022, the Sight & Sound critics’ poll named it as the 30th greatest movie of all time.
Not only is it advised to watch a movie with excellent reviews that is hailed as a modern masterpiece, but the movie is a tragically beautiful love story. The main tragedy in this LGBTQ+ romance, however, is how society is destined to keep these two people in love apart, as opposed to other LGBTQ+ romances which typically contain a sad death. They would have had a chance if they had been born later. Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a stunning movie with excellent acting that is perfect for Valentine’s Day or any other time of the year.
Something’s Gotta Give
The king of the romantic comedy genre, Nancy Meyers, directed Something’s Gotta Give in 2003. In spite of initially hating each other, Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton—two actors in their 60s and 50s, respectively—begin to fall in love in the film. The film has an all-star cast that includes Jon Favreau, Keanu Reeves, Amanda Peet, and Frances McDormand.
Given that Diane Keaton received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, the movie is a great time capsule of the era when romantic comedies dominated the box office and were strong contenders for accolades. Something’s Gotta Give is fundamentally a reminder that it is never too late to find true love, which is why it has endured for so long.
Zack and Miri Make a Porno
Given how obscene the title sounds, Zack and Miri Make a Porno may not seem like a Valentine’s Day movie at first, but that is sort of what makes the movie so clever. After losing power, the movie centers on the titular pair. When they decide to make their own porno to make money and enlist the aid of their friends and other individuals, these two childhood friends and roommates start to fall in love with one another.
The foundation of Zack and Miri Make a Porno is a really sincere and lovely love tale, but it also contains plenty of the expected vulgar sex gags and laugh-out-loud moments. This film isn’t just about having sex; it’s also about discovering love and how it may occasionally be found right in front of you.
