The Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones for Elden Ring and Somber are extraordinary, one-of-a-kind goods that cannot be purchased, farmed, or acquired indefinitely in any other way. Your weapons can only be upgraded so far using Elden Ring Smithing Stones and Elden Ring Somber Smithing Stones. You need the Ancient version to complete the level.
Players must continue carefully because there are only 13 Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones and 8 Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones in the entire Elden Ring, making it impossible to upgrade more than a small portion of their weapons to their maximum potential of +25 or +10. The weapons you improve to +24 will, of course, not be very weak, but you’ll need the Ancient Stones to bring back to Hewg and have him Smith them into the final tier of upgrades if you want the entire upgrade.
So, Tarnished, it’s time to go hunting. The locations of all the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones in Elden Ring, including the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones, are listed here.
All Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones’ locations in Elden Ring
There are 21 Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones in all, 8 of which are Somber, to be uncovered. Simply select the links you require by clicking on them or by scrolling down. The majority of these Ancient Stones are either found in late-game regions that require you to know how to reach the Consecrated Snowfield in Elden Ring or as the result of quests and questlines that span the entire campaign, so players will undoubtedly need to be in the late-game stages of Elden Ring to find them. Simply put, you won’t be acquiring these late-game goodies any time soon if you’ve just defeated Godrick or are still exploring Caelid for the first time. We’re sorry to have to break this to you.
For information on where to find them, scroll down and click on the relevant links. You may also use them to learn how to craft more Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones than the few that are already included in the game.

Using the connecting chambers once more, exit the Prayer Room and proceed to the outer ring on your left, which is guarded by the Putrid Avatar. You can simply sprint to the body on the far Southern side and loot it for the Stone without having to kill it.
A Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is awarded to those who complete the Elden Ring Millicent questline and gain Miquella’s Needle through the scarlet flower, even though it wasn’t technically obtained by killing Malenia. We can show you how to defeat Malenia in Elden Ring if you’re having problems.
Latenna will present you with a reward for finishing her questline in the Apostate Derelict.
How to use Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones for upgrades
No matter if you utilise Somber ones or not, Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones only ever require you to use one for the last step of improvements. So, for instance, upgrading a weapon from level 24 to level 25 will always take a single Ancient Dragon Stone and never more.
Make sure you have all the Elden Ring Smithing Stones and Elden Ring Somber Smithing Stones you need for that. If your weapons are not at +24 (or +9 if they are unique Somber Weapons), you’ll need to make sure they are as improved as they can be without them.
The actual process for upgrading your weapons with these stones is the same as it is for upgrading any other Smithing Stones: take your ready-to-be-upgraded weapons to Hewg, and in exchange for the Stones and some runes as payment, he’ll give them the final upgrade. You should know that this cannot be reversed! Any type of Ancient Stone that is used to improve a weapon cannot be reversed; the Stone is destroyed in the process.
How to get more Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones in Elden Ring
The only way to replenish your supply of Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones, Somber or not, is to launch Journey 2, also known as New Game Plus. You must start over, resetting the world and moving everyone back to their original locations because Elden Ring can only ever have the 21 Stones indicated above in one playthrough. In our guide to everything there is to do in Elden Ring before NG+, we also include information on whether the ones you already have in your bag will carry over.
