Apple TV+’s Tetris Trailer Breakdown: What to Expect From This Sci-Fi Thriller

  • DCS

Tetris is a puzzle game that was made in the Soviet Union. It has been around for almost forty years, but it is still popular because it keeps coming up with new ways to be as good as the best video games of each generation. The player must keep fitting tetrominoes, which are square pieces with different shapes, into a narrow game field as they slide from the top to the bottom of the screen. This can be deceiving, though, because your score and the speed at which the pieces fall both go up when you make and break filled lines.

Tetris became popular all over the world because of this fun but quickly hard idea. The first version of the game came out in 1984 on a Russian computer called the Electronika 60. Next month, Apple TV+ will show the world an equally entertaining story about how the hit game got to America.

Up until then, people of all ages who like games and movies have been able to watch an official trailer. Let’s see what the preview has to offer with Taron Egerton as the main character, the Dutch game designer Henk Rogers.

Tetris Is Puzzling to Many Potential Investors

The trailer starts with a bumper that shows Rick Yune (Prison Break) as Larry and other characters from the movie repeating the word “Tetris.” The main title screen of the movie comes after these quick changes. Rogers explains to a potential investor that Tetris is important by showing them an early version of the classic game being played on a computer screen. He then says that Tetris is a mix of art and music. In his dreams, he sees blocks coming down. He thinks it’s the best game ever.

In contrast to the emotional speech that just ended, the bumper plays again, but this time it’s clear that the same people are not impressed with the game. Rogers then goes on to explain how Tetris works, pointing out that it is a mix of “tetra” and “tennis” because the game’s creator likes tennis. The audience is then shown Nikita Efremov’s character, Alexey Pajitnov, and how he got the idea for the ever-popular game from seeing some small blocks in the window of a store one night.

Rogers quickly walks into an office building while his voice describes the speech he will give to the person he is about to meet. The scene starts with a quick shot of his alligator boots stepping out of a car. Being one of the first ten people to see the Nintendo Game Boy, the engineers in the room ask the Dutch game designer if he can get the rights to Tetris, which he says must come with the new handheld. We then see and hear Rogers talk about how the Soviet Union has worldwide rights and will stop anything from getting out.

Securing the Game’s Rights

Then, the trailer shows Akemi, Roger’s wife. After she tries to talk him down from the idea of getting rich from licensing Tetris, he reminds her of how quiet their apartment is because their two kids are so into playing the game. The peaceful moment is then broken up by an 8-bit plane flying over the screen, and then a man with a mustache and a briefcase walks into Moscow in a stylized animation. Rogers meeting Alexey Pajitnov for the first time is a sign of what is to come. He promises to make Pajitnov a millionaire.

Rogers tells a Soviet official that he is there to play Tetris, which builds on what was said earlier in the trailer. The tough-looking negotiator tells Rogers that he knows they are only there for the money. Alexey then tells the audience and Henk that the strongest members of the Communist Party are watching him and his family. A scary wide shot of Russia’s capital with its scary military and a bunch of scary communist agents show Rogers what kind of danger he is in for. After a few quick shots of the video game designer being dragged and hit, another character off-screen hears him say that everything is crazy.

Henk tells Alexey quickly in a small apartment hallway that sometimes they have to break the rules. The tension is briefly broken when the main character sings along with Europe’s “The Final Countdown” at a party. Pajitnov, Henk, and two other people run into a car when they hear a knock, trying to get away from the danger. A splash screen tells us that this movie is about a game that none of us could stop playing. We see quick shots of our main characters running away and armed guards coming toward our main character. The tension is at its highest point, so Henk tells his wife that everyone is lying. A deep voice says, “The cavalry is coming,” and the car Pajitnov is driving suddenly hits an oncoming car, bringing the two worlds together. Just before everything goes back to being 8-bit, the crash makes both of their heads move back and forth.

Discovering What Tetris Is All About

Henk was in a meeting when the other person left him all of a sudden, giving the trailer a nostalgic feel-good moment. He yells out as the door shuts in his face that they are the kings of cliffhangers. We then cut to Henk standing on one side of an office desk, waiting patiently for Hiroshi Yamauchi (Togo Igawa) to finish playing a round of Tetris. He quickly puts down the controller and says, “Not bad.”

Even though this trailer is enough for now, people can’t wait to see this suspenseful movie about how an iconic 1980s video game came to be. Tetris will make its first appearance on Apple TV+ on March 31.
