Is The Brown Family From Sister Wives Religious? Which Religion Do They Follow?

  • DCS

The “Sister Wives” cast members may spend a substantial portion of their lives in the spotlight, but the 18-member family has made a concerted effort to keep many aspects of their lives secret, including the religion they practise.

Following their rise to fame in 2010, Kody Brown, his wives Meri, Janelle, and Robyn, as well as his ex-wife Christine, captivated the world. The programme centres on a polygamist household navigating contemporary monogamy. Although there are more persons in the marriage, the Browns see polygamy as no different from monogamy and view it as an act of selflessness. Then-sister wife Christine Brown said on the programme, “In each [marriage], we’re just as committed, it’s an eternal commitment that we’ve made with each other, and a lot of monogamous relationships are like that.”

The Brown family openly discusses plural marriage and its advantages, but they rarely discuss how religion influences their support for plural marriage. Fans are now curious as to what religion the Brown family belongs to.

The Browns are a member of the Mormon religion

The Brown family is outspoken about their choice to have a multiple marriage, but they are less forthcoming about their religious beliefs. The patriarch Kody Brown revealed that the Browns are conservative Mormons in the first episode of “Sister Wives.” There is a difference between the fundamentalist sect the Browns belong to and the main LDS sect, also known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, despite Kody’s claim that they adhere to the Mormon religion. Fundamentalist Mormons still engage in polygamy, much like the Brown family, which is the major distinction between the two groups. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not.

The Browns are specifically members of the Apostolic United Brethren, a fundamentalist Mormon group. The Apostolic United Brethren, according to theological expert J. Gordon Melton, are a “more liberal branch of the fundamentalist movement. So, is it legal for Kody to wed more than one of his wives?

Kody Brown is only legally married to one wife

Despite the fact that the Brown family practises a liberal version of the fundamentalist Mormon religion, Kody Brown was not able to legally wed more than one woman.

Kody wed Meri Brown as his first wife back in 1990. According to Us Weekly, he spiritually wed Janelle Brown, his second wife, in 1993, and Christine Brown, his third wife, in 1995. In order to legally wed Robyn Brown, his fourth wife, Kody divorced Meri in 2014 (even though they were still spiritually married). Robyn had three children from a previous marriage that Kody wanted to adopt, so it was decided to legally marry her and divorce Meri. While Kody and Robyn initially insisted that their legal union was only for the benefit of their children, ex-wife Christine revealed in 2022 that Robyn was Kody’s preferred partner.

Not only that, but after Christine left the family, sources told Us Weekly that Kody was allegedly interested in finding new wives to join the clan because his current wives are dissatisfied with him. Although it’s possible that Kody’s other wives would object, at least we know his religion wouldn’t.
