Spoilers for The Boys season 3 episode 3 are underneath.
The Boys occasionally employs ridiculous shock techniques to make comments on matters that are actually pretty significant. For instance, employing horrific brutality and, yes, talking gills, season two hit hard on themes of misogyny and body dysphoria. However, sometimes shock tactics are just that—moments intended to start a conversation by freaking us out.
As an illustration, consider the scene from season three, episode three, where The Deep makes love to his girlfriend while maintaining eye contact with an octopus. He says, “You’re so fucking wet,” but we know he’s not actually referring to the woman he’s been deeply involved with. When Chace Crawford’s character later says, “Jerk me off with all your arms,” it’s a dead giveaway.
Particularly, that line caused a few raised eyebrows—both in the bed and among us watching at home. Because even for a figure based on the “fish-fucking” hero, Aquaman, that is a lot (at least, if Peacemaker is anything to go by).
You’d anticipate that they will interact once more in the future given the unique bond that The Deep has undoubtedly formed with the aforementioned octopus. But who would have imagined that just a few scenes later in the same programme, this connection would go horribly wrong, so quickly. And no, despite the fact that there is a lot of tongue movement, we do not even mean in a sexual sense.
After welcoming The Deep back into the fold, Homelander prepares a special welcome supper that is only composed of seafood, otherwise known as The Deep’s best friends, in order to demonstrate his dominance over him once more (and perhaps even lovers too…)
In a revolting cacophony of sucking, slurping noises that would be too much for anyone, much less someone who consciously desires sex with mollusks, oysters are devoured and lobsters are cracked open.
Naturally, Homelander is an expert at what he does. He doesn’t stop there, though, because that would make him a monster. After that, a live octopus served as the “special dish” is brought out; yes, this is the same octopus that The Deep eye-fucked while physically fucking his lover.
Timothy, it turns out, is the real name of this delicacy, but Homelander doesn’t care. Timothy is “fucking delicious,” so he doesn’t even care if he is The Deep’s “buddy.” Naturally, our underwater hero makes every effort to escape, but Homelander is desperate to catch Timothy wriggling into his mouth, and given the power dynamics in play, The Deep is powerless.
Even his fiancée begs him to “eat the fucking octopus,” and The Deep ultimately accedes to her request, whether it was motivated by envy or simply a desire to see them both succeed at Vought. Then, as Timothy jerks back with all of his tentacles, he exclaims, “I’m so sorry,” which is the exact opposite of what he desired when it came to all of those small arms and any other kind of jerking motion.
According to The Deep, Timothy sends out one final prayer before entering and being gobbled up by The Deep. They claim seafood is aphrodisiac, but when Timothy’s ink sac explodes all over his face, it’s not exactly the satisfying conclusion either party was expecting for.
Except for Homelander, that is. Without a question, he was enjoying it.
What about Chace Crawford, though? After all, it was he who was forced to consume Timothy.
In our private conversation, Chace says, “It wasn’t as intense as it looked. “That required a great deal of acting. But it was still extremely…” Delicious? Maybe disgusting?
Chace exclaims, “It was great,” yet at this point he’s speaking primarily to the VFX crew and their efforts.
Crawford continues, “There were different octopi, different little Timothys.” “Mochi legs were present. One of them was leaking something sweet, like maple syrup. However, there was one when they simply taped my face with these tiny strings. My face was being pulled by someone down there. Man, it was really strange.”
That may sound like a lot of labour, but the actual shooting didn’t take as long as Chace had anticipated. “In a couple of tries, I believe we perfected each tiny arrangement. Then it was over. But it was revolting. It was intense when I watched some of the daily shows.”
Looking back, it’s simple to dismiss this “gross, intense” scene as merely another ploy to startle viewers who have gotten accustomed to blowing up wangs and performing uncomfortable hand-jobs. To be fair, however, there’s more to this than just a sentient creature pleading for his life as he is about to be devoured.
But as a viewer, this all reveals a lot about the power dynamics between Homelander and The Deep, not to mention how screwed up they both are. That might not be a tremendous consolation for Timothy’s children, who he reminds The Deep about just seconds before he dies.
Therefore, while this scene has us all talking and we are all collectively frightened, it also speaks a lot about manipulation and abuse in the workplace, which is critically important. And, for that matter, fish fetishes as well.
