We now have the release date for Meg 2: The Trench, which stars Jason Statham and returns us to the realm of the extinct shark. News that Meg 2: The Trench would open in theatres right as summer beach vacation season began to spread at the Warner Bros. panel at CinemaCon!
Although there will be a roughly 5-year gap between The Meg and its sequel, with a release date of August 4, 2023, it will still be exciting for fans to return with Statham as Jonas Taylor. The release date is the most important piece of information we’ve learned about the film, even if we don’t know much about it other than the involvement of action actor Wu Jing and screenwriters Dean Georgaris, Ric Hoeber, and Jon Hoeber.
Given that the Mariana Trench is highlighted in the sequel’s title and since the Meg transported us there, we may theoretically be exploring more of it. Even if they succeeded in killing the mega-shark in the end, more of them are still likely to surface after Jonas Taylor and his team. The fact that more than one meg may have escaped the Trench is really noteworthy.
When speaking to Collider about Guy Ritchie’s Wrath of Man back in the day, Statham mentioned his want to get back in the water:
“Yes, we will begin filming in January. The film’s director is Ben Wheatley. I’m eager to collaborate with him. I can’t wait to start, you know. We’ve been waiting a while for the appropriate script and director to show up, and now we have both of those things. Now they are all stacked. Ben is fantastic. We already have a fantastic abbreviation. We share similar interests, I enjoy his films, and I believe he is a talented director. I believe we have a fair chance of producing something worthwhile.”
Although I personally watch shark movies frequently despite being scared of them, I couldn’t explain why summer is such a popular season for shark movies, but it’s the ideal time to release the sequel. Who doesn’t enjoy an action film with Statham? The ideal way to cap off the summer is with an aquatic action film, and we’ve been waiting long enough for The Meg 2!
On August 4, 2023, Meg 2: The Trench will be released in theatres, and if it’s half as thrilling as the first one, we’re in for a wild journey.
