Is Netflix’s The Snow Girl Based on a True Story?
The drama is not based on a real event. Rather, it is based on a book written by Javier Castillo that was released in 2020. The novel and the television drama both go by the Spanish title La Chica de Nieve. Following the novel’s success in Spain, a show adaptation was eagerly requested.
Additionally, the book is a work of fiction and does not incorporate any true events. Castillo admitted that the inspiration for the book came to him while he was once out walking with his wife and little daughter and suddenly realized that he had let go of his daughter’s hand.
The novel was inspired by his anxiety and the dread he would experience if something terrible happened to her. On Amazon, the book currently has over 3,000 five-star reviews.
The Netflix version and the novel nevertheless differ in a few minor ways. While the television series is set in 2010 in the Spanish city of Malaga, the disappearance in the book occurs in New York City in 1998. The girl’s name has also been altered. The series referred to her as Amaya, whereas the novel referred to her as Kiera.
