The Three-Body Problem: Plot

Chinese physicist and nanomaterial researcher Wang Miao is asked by state intelligence to infiltrate The Frontiers of Science, a group connected to a spate of suicides among its members, and as a result finds himself at the centre of a massive conspiracy. Astronomer Ye Wenjie saw her father’s horrible murder forty years prior to the main plot during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. After her father was murdered, she was transferred to a work camp in Daxing’anling Prefecture, but due to her scientific training, she was eventually recruited and taken to a secret radar facility in a far-off part of China. Ye’s daughter is one of the suicides Wang must investigate, and as she tells him about her hidden employment in the institution, they become friends.

Wang is also playing Three Bodies, a mysterious virtual reality game based on a planet with highly unpredictable weather and day/night cycles. The game shows an extraterrestrial society trying to create a useful calendar as their culture is regularly wiped out by waves of severe heat and cold with no discernible regularity. In order to help the creatures understand the nature of their surroundings, the player must use the scientific method in the game.
