The pioneering hip-hop group De La Soul, whose album “3 Feet High and Rising” is one of the best ever made, is sad about the death of co-founder Dave Jolicouer, aka Trugoy the Dove. Dave died when he was 54 years old, and a member of the group confirmed the news. It turned out that the Brooklyn-born rapper had been sick for a long time with a number of different problems. In 2018, it was said that he was having trouble with congestive heart failure.

Fans paid tribute on social media to the legendary artist who led the group whose sample-heavy, psychedelic sound changed music. “Dave! Big Daddy Kane said on Instagram, “It was an honor to share so many stages with you.” Erik Sermon, a rap artist, wrote, “This one hurts. One of the best rap groups in Hip-Hop, Delasoul, is from Long Island. Dave has died. We will miss you… RIP.”

“Rest in peace, my brother,” said Young Guru. We cared about you. @plugwondelasoul We are here for you, brother. I love you. Smiles I love you bro. This is crazy,” DJ Semtex wrote, and “heart-wrenching news” was another comment.

De La Soul was a hip-hop group that started in the Amityville area of Long Island, New York, in 1988. They were best known for their unique sampling and lyrics, as well as for helping jazz rap and alternative hip-hop grow as subgenres. The group became well-known after releasing their first album, “3 Feet High and Rising,” which is still considered a masterpiece of hip-hop.

Dave talked about his struggle with congestive heart failure in the music video for De La Soul’s 2017 single “Royalty Capes” from their most recent studio album, And the Anonymous Nobody. He said that he had to wear a Life Vest, which “will shock me and hopefully bring me back from the matrix.” He also said, “I’m ready to just get back on the stage.” I miss it. I love going on trips and being with my friends. I want that thing back.”

Dave Jolicoeur died just a few weeks before the band’s best songs would be made available to stream. Everyone agrees that their album “3 Feet High and Rising” is one of the best of all time, but it didn’t come out until after a long legal battle over sampling clearances.

Last week, the hip-hop group’s influence was recognized at the Grammy Awards, where “Buddy” from De La Soul’s hit album “3 Feet High” was played for a short time. But only Posdnos, whose real name is Kevin Mercer, performed at the ceremony. In these hard times, our hearts go out to his family.
