The popular horror movie M3GAN will soon be available on home media, and with it, a different cut of the picture that wasn’t shown in theatres. The “UNRAT3D” version of M3GAN will be one of the special additional features for the release, which has a date for its digital, Blu-ray, and DVD releases. On February 24, 2023, the release is available digitally. On March 21, 2023, Blu-ray and DVD copies will be made available. The unrated version will also be made available for viewing on Peacock on February 24.
The alternate edit has been promised by writer Akela Cooper as being “much gorier” than the one fans have seen and includes material that was far too bloody for the PG-13 cut that was presented in theatres. The author previously told the L.A. Times that, despite understanding the justification for choosing a PG-13 rating, he hoped that one day fans will be able to watch this bloodier version.
Without intending to disparage Universal, whom he stated he loved, Cooper remarked, “I get that once the trailer went viral, adolescents got involved and you want them to be able to watch it.” It was much grimmer. In the script, she had more deaths than in the final product. Although it wasn’t a massacre on the same size as Gabriel [in Malignant], she did kill a number of additional individuals, including a few characters who James [Wan] said, “I like what you did with those people, but I want them to live.” I was cruel, but then again, that’s me. My sense of humour is rather dark.
The movie, which was directed by Gerard Johnstone and was based on a Cooper and Wan story, Johnstone has also mentioned how M3GAN became even more horrifying as a result of the PG-13 designation.
According to him, via Total Film, “Making it PG-13 was something that happened after the fact, but it was always so near to PG-13 anyhow.” Not embracing it seems like a mistake. Even at that early stage, I recall thinking, “This might be PG-13, and some of my favourite movies, like Drag Me to Hell, are PG-13.” Therefore, we decided to go PG-13 and actually reshot a few scenes.
The fact that those scenes were more impactful after we reshot them made him particularly happy, he continued. Yes, you do have to cut away occasionally, but it’s fun to rely so heavily on music and suggestion.
