The epic second prequel to Yellowstone is now under production. John Dutton’s relatives are Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren in the Paramount+ premiere of 1923 on December 18. Another “Yellowstone origin narrative” by Taylor Sheridan has been produced. It follows a different family of Duttons as they struggle to survive in the harsh Mountain West while outsiders strive to seize their land. The story is set 40 years after the events in 1883. Someone is constantly attempting to take their land! The only place to see the show is on Paramount+.
Here is all we currently know about 1923, including the premiere date, the actors, how to watch, and what to anticipate from the Dutton family’s current generation.

Taylor Sheridan asserted that 1923 is one of the most costly TV shows ever produced in an interview with Deadline. He claimed that 1923 is “far more expensive” than 1883, which he described as “the most expensive first season of a TV show ever filmed.” (Sheridan exaggerates when claiming that 1883 had the “most costly first season;” The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’s first season, which included the cost of the streaming rights, is known to have cost around $1 billion.)
Sheridan claimed that the dedication to accuracy is what makes 1923 so pricey. The program spends a lot of money on the thousands of cattle heads it utilizes. African shooting is not acceptable either. You know how difficult it is, with all the restrictions and politics, to move a crew around in Africa in 2022 with Covid? stated Sheridan. “We were in [three] African nations. It’s not like we just visited a tiny South African preserve.” Sheridan estimates that the cost of each episode ranges from $30 to $35 million, making the total cost of the 16 episodes of the show around $240 million.
Hopefully, Paramount is recovering some of those costs. Variety claims that the 1923 premiere attracted 7.4 million people across linear broadcasts and streaming, making it Paramount+’s most successful debut to date. In contrast, 10.3 million people watched the Yellowstone Season 5 premiere, which airs on a cable network (Paramount Network) as opposed to a paid streaming service.
Yellowstone Prequel 1923 Review
In his review of the 1923 series debut for TV Guide, Liam Mathews called it “an big project with a ton of potential that will give Yellowstone fans a series that at times feels familiar and other times feels like it’s stretching what Yellowstone can be.” Review the article.
Yellowstone Prequel 1923 Premise
The spin-off, initially titled 1932 before the creators changed the year in which it is set, takes place during the Prohibition era after World War I, with Montana facing an economic collapse before the Great Depression. This places the story about 40 years after the events of 1883 and about 30 or 35 years before the birth of Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton III.
“1923 focuses on the Dutton family’s next two generations as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness and Prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle theft; all battled under the cloud of Montana’s great depression, which preceded the country by almost ten years,” according to the official show description.
How to Watch, Every Show, The Dutton Family Tree, and More in The Yellowstone Universe
The Dutton family’s trek across the plains to Montana was chronicled in 1883, along with the story of how they ended up settling there as opposed to their intended destination of Oregon. The teenage daughter of James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret (Faith Hill), Elsa (Isabel May), was wounded by a Lakota arrow in the liver before James and Margaret could travel all the way to the Pacific Northwest. James brought her to a beautiful valley in Montana where she passed away; the valley later became the Dutton farm. John, Elsa’s younger brother, apparently grew up to honor his sister and carry on the Dutton name, however that aspect of the tale is still unclear and is anticipated to be disclosed in 1923.
1923 Trailers
Yellowstone Season 5’s fourth episode was when the full-length trailer for 1923 debuted, giving us a much better understanding of the plot of the upcoming series. In 1923, the Dutton family has a solid foothold on their ranch, but they find themselves in yet another “range war” as developers, cowboys, and hunters all appear to want a piece of the same territory. And even while you might think that having to fight Harrison Ford for a few acres is a bad idea, it’s nothing compared to the wrath that Cara, played by Helen Mirren, appears to be capable of inflicting on anyone who cross her.
During the opening of Yellowstone’s fifth season, the first teaser trailer for 1923 was released. In addition to showing viewers Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford for the first time in the Yellowstone universe, the teaser also had a voiceover that seemed quite familiar. The new series was introduced by Elsa (Isabel May) from 1883, who narrated a montage of various tense shootouts and tense incidents while noting that the Duttons have always been cursed with or followed violence.
